Hi guys!

New poster here. Haven't played WoC since we could use beasts and warriors together and back then it was a nurgle themed army.

Right now I've almost finished a wood elf army and a chaos dwarf army and am looking for my next project. Having read about Djengis Khan and already have a slaanesh themed chaos space marines army, I wanted to do an all-mounted slaanesh list. Something quite different from my WE and CD!

A good theme besides sticking to MoS would be to have all models in the army M7 or above to represent a fast-moving cavalry army like the mongols. I also want to stay clear of the DP since everyone is pretty sick of him now.

So for lords I want a lvl 4 on a steed of slaanesh. The lore is pretty kick-ass and I want him to be able to keep up with all the rest of the army.

Heroes: lvl 2 (slaanesh or shadow?), exalted on steed of slaanesh (do I need a bsb with lots of MoS)

Core: marauder cav (sure, they aren't optimal, but its my theme), chaos hounds (screen and theme) and chariots (theme and hitting power. Could be left behind by the rest of the army with no march, but they can guard my flanks effectively)

Special: knights (hit hard) and hellstriders (fast!)

Rare: shaggoth (only rare/monster with M7)

I'm going to put banners on the knights and marauders for blood and glory and keep all units pretty low on numbers (incidently, most units ended up at 6 models, even more fluffy!)

Now I have already decided on the troops themselves with the cav theme and all, what I'm not sure of yet are the characters. Is the lvl 4 a good choice or should I go for a more fighty hero and two lvl 2s? How to equip the heroes? I've read a couple of places about a "hortense" build, but I don't know what that actually is.

Any help is appreciated!

I love the lvl4 sorcerer lord of slaanesh with a chaos familiar, steed of slaanesh and a charmed shield. He runs with a bodyguard of 8-9 marauder horsemen of slaanesh. He gets look out sir rolls, and should he fail the charmed shield protects him. He has 5 spells too, guaranteeing you get what you want most of the time.

A BSB is still useful for breaktests and the +1 CR. Try to get either of the fire protection items on him.

Core looks good. If you do some conversions, you could pass off skullcrushers as Slaaneshi (using the slaanesh daemonic mounts etc). Otherwise Knights can work. I would avoid hellstriders because you get enough fast cavalry from your core. Try to get some heavy hitters in to complement your core.

You can't ignore Hellstriders if you're having a Slani theme! :P 2-3 units of those can be some scary fast cav to harrass and combi-charge with chariots and the shaggoths. That being said, I would definitely recommend chariots for your core, along with a marauder cav bunker for your lord. They will add the killing power you need when coming up against a lot of infantry. Run them in "units" and smash, smash, smash. Them, knights, and shaggoths would be your main hammers, and with everything being super fast and screening dogs, it could work out quite well!

Slaanesh/Shadow both work really well, try out both and see which one you like most. I prefer Shadow, if only to make my chariot's impact hits S8 :P

The "Hortennse" build reffers to the 3++ re-rolling 1s unkillable lord/hero combo from the Mark of Tz/Third eye. Cheesy but effective.

Sorceror lord mos in a unit of hellstriders can be in the position for a bubble choir in turn 1. Bsb is still vital for rerolling break tests. Because you have hardly any ranks and no steadfast the reroll will be very important.

I was thinking about chariots in an all mounted list. Yay or nay? The chariots are slow compared to the rest of the army, but having something to hang back and protect my flanks when most of the army get stuck in the middle could be a good thing. Its also a lot of punch on a small frontage to sneak in on the edge of a unit next to wider units of knights for instance.

Yeah, I run a list with a similar theme to this and the core chariots are essential. The rest of your army is in combat very fast and has very little staying power, so some tough, well armoured units arriving a little later is lovely, and having lots of small units around the place causes no problems for Slaanesh armies.

I'm always disappointed with the performance of my Marauder Horsemen - they're just that bit too expensive to be throw-away chaff, and a bit too fragile to help in many combats. Dogs and Chariots is the way to go, especially if you want Hellstriders too.

Seeing as you're already willing to take non-optimal units, I would suggest considering swapping the Shaggoth for a Giant of Slaanesh - fits the theme a little better and I will always love mine for the time he one-shotted a Great Unclean One with his club. People really understimate them, and the Init 4 is a significant boost over a standard Giant (though don't expect him to ever be reliable!)

Think about giving the sorc lord the ogre blade or similar, when the lore of slaanesh atribute triggers he can become a true blender, after a well placed choir, you could easily get +4/+5 attacks.
