I've been toying with an idea, as I live in what can affectionately be called BFE. It's about an hour and a half from here to the local gaming shop, so I don't get nearly as many games in as I'd like. So, what I'm wondering is if there's an online method for playing Warhammer. Depending on how it looks and works, I'd like to consider running some games on it and putting together some battle reports. One of the things I don't like generally about Battle Reports is that it's always one perspective, what I'd like to do is play someone virtually, record it, and have commentary over it. The banter back and forth during a game is half the fun. If it works like it does in my head, it could actually be pretty entertaining to watch. Thoughts? |

I think issues about ranges, charge distances would be a real problem. I've got a lot of experience live streaming events so i can give some tips on camras/sound/streaming services etc hell you can even use skype and just record the screen and sound but i think the issue will be actually playing because you need to be right in the action to judge angels for redirectors etc i'm very interested in where this is going |

First off, there's Universal Battle. :) That's quite popular. Then there's the method of playing via Skype or a similar software. I (quite badly :P ) played a game like that with Malorian. Here's a batrep from his perspective: Canada VS Sweden It works. Not that great for competitive games, but it's doable. :) Theo Edited by theorox, Jan 12 2014, 04:40 AM.

Very interesting. The BR highlighted some interesting things. One player has all the models? |

Yep, that's the only way you can possibly do it. If you for example used pieces of paper with the same footprints as your opponent's units and moved them as your opponent moved them you could probably never get it quite right. And what would the point be? :) Theo |

Looks to me the unoversal battle program would be better but you don't play with minis anymore. What we need is a teleporter.. |

Or linked holographic projectors. One overlays on your game table what the other one sees. Holodeck anyone? Cow-lick Pig-eared challenges all! Make it so! |

Holographic projection on the table, that is a seriously good idea and (kind of sort of) possible, only problem is cost of the technology and time to setup before the battle :( |

A friend of mine who's in the army, and I play over Skype once in a while and we grid out the table using packing string. Then we use protractors for communicating position of units relative to long/short sides of grid boxes so we make sure the opponent gets the position right. |

There are two methods I know of for playing battles online. Universal Battle as Theo mentioned is great. You can make your own representations of models which can be fairly accurate, plenty of good terrain, lots of tools for measuring distances and charge arcs, and a simple message system you can use in battle which is great. UB also has a chat room where you can find opponents. It does cost $30 for a permanent membership (which you don't need to play), but that's a pretty good deal. Only downside to UB is the dice rolls are all shown in the message box which get's a little tedious to count up if you roll a lot of dice at one time but that's really it. Then there is Battle Chronicler, a free program you have to download. Units are represented by colored boxes with letters to represent the units. BC is great for battle reports but I think for online battles it's not nearly as good as UB because 1. you need to email the file back and forth between turns-it's not live action that you can both see. 2. representations are not as nice as UB and the need to use a separate message system is not as nice. Only real upside is it's free. So UB really is the better system. I've probably played 30 games on UB over the past year, and although it never comes close to being as good as face to face battles it's good to use if you don't get many opportunities at gaming stores like I do or if you're just craving a battle. |
