Store Closings and Abandoned Armies

Super Short version:
Quote:

There are big changes happening. Finecast gone, GW stores in Germany gone, Wood Elves/ Bretonnians/ Beastmen/ Khemri also gone.

Wood Elves and Brets have been waiting on new books for quite a while, but I just have a hard time picturing them being abandoned. Beastmen and Tomb Kings, I don't know much about, but it seems TK has been supported fairly well.

*IF* this rumor is even partially true, I wonder if they'd merge Beastmen back into Chaos, and TK & VC back together as Undead?

HE & WE could potentially go the way of just "Warhammer Elves" - uniting them under a banner, but I'm not sue how that would work with the fluff as it's been written for however many years.

Brets, I dunno much about. Maybe as a noble class within the Empire? Maybe GW just dislikes models with the fleur-de-lis (*cough*sisters-of-battle*cough*)

Not buying it, no company wipes out such a huge percentage of their product this drastically. Based on comments from other boards looks like the reporting site has a history of reporting any junk that comes by. Fine cast was always a stop gap measure, so I do believe that, maybe just hoping on my part. Everything minus the 4 armies is somewhat believable, although the stores in Germany aren't being closed, just HQ consolidated under UK.

I saw that as well (everything you state), and agree wholeheartedly.

Actually, wasn't there a different rumor about replacing or consolidating the army books with some kind of 'collection' of sorts? That would almost make this proposed rumor slightly more believable albeit misleading.

Considering there is ever rumors of them closing down support of Fantasy & go fully for 40K I donīt know what I should believe anymore. IF they remove said armies, then I am sure the 1 big book rumor has some validation, cause that would mean they could merge a few of those armies into others, beastmen into Chaos, Khermi as undead with VC, Bretonnia could be realms of man & WE would just go into HE & form "elves".

As a U.S. Fantasy player, I can see where these rumors gain some weight. Fantasy is much, much less popular than 40k as a whole. When I go to my local game shop, I see the same group of seven or so people playing fantasy; once in awhile you'll get someone new that comes from a different area and is just looking for some fresh competition, but that's about it.

That being said, I've never, EVER seen ANYBODY playing LOTR (in the entirety of the game's life). It could be that I just live in an area where it's not popular (the store doesn't stock LOTR very well, almost as if they don't want anyone to play it.) If that's representative at all of the general GW gaming community, then I could see GW transferring LOTR to Forgeworld (abandoning it without actually abandoning it).

It makes sense to me that Forgeworld products would be offered on the GW webpage. Actually, I kinda wonder why it took this long.

I seriously doubt that GW would abandon Finecast. They've done too much investing with it to drop it. Whether you like it or not, I think Finecast is here to stay.

WE, Bretonnia, Beastmen and TK no longer being supported? Eh, probably not. Even if TK got boned by a new book, you still see it well represented in the community. Same with Bretonnia and Beastmen (I've actually seen Beastmen players growing in numbers). Wood Elves definitely aren't being played, though. Every WE player I've met says that they are basically unplayable, and are waiting for a new book. If they're dropping support for any army, it's WE. But, I don't think that they will, when GW can make more money by simply writing a new book.

After GW's fiasco with calling some of their non-GW affiliated stores "freeloaders" a couple years back, and also cutting back a lot of these stores' ability to order product (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnPpfs120DA), I can see them making 30% of their range to be webshop exclusive.

All GW stores in Germany closing? Well that seems extreme. A bunch of stores have closed in the U.S., but I don't think they'll close all stores and eliminate all representation. Maybe business is really in the red in Germany, but I'm no economist, and I have no idea what their business figures are there. *shrugs*

Might, to see where the rumors came from, if you ca wade through it all, read:

http://masterminis.blogspot.de/2014/01/the-future-of-games-workshop-part9.html?m=1

Ther are nine parts (whoosh!), but it's well reasoned, and the guy is connected in Europe.

Considering the way formations, scrolls, SoC, etc. are filtering in to "official" events, that makes the book consolidation/faction combining theory seem reasonable. But I would suspect mini codex, like Sisters of Battle, to be at least an interim release. Since they just gave us WoC, they're not going to put beastmen back in a HoC style book anytime soon. And as a beastmen player, I would be happy with a points update and proper application of existing rules, like using BRB ambush rules. just a dreamer, I guess.

Bah, I lack the mental focus to really take it all in at the moment :( (read: my normal state of mind lately).

Even if it's not a "combined" codex in the since of reviving Hordes of Chaos - I wonder if the 4 book rumor would essentially be 'consolidated' ie. One book covering "The Forces of Chaos" style thing. Would make even more since with the *shrug*

I think the German store thing got blown way out of proportion. Other articles/rumors made a comment about consolidating the GW EU HQ's (three acronyms in a row!) but the actual stores seem to be staying as they have.

Finecast, dunno, though I do keep hearing it was just a temp thing.

LOTR - never seen anyone play.

Forge world products in GW stores - makes sense.

Many new players only buy space marines. In some ways 15 races in WFB is too many and this looks pretty sensible for the company I would argue. Shame as two of the lost armies I really enjoy
