One of my friends just told me that witch hunters with Ruby Ring of Ruin can target characters in units with the fireball spells and essentially assassinate them.

Is this legal? I don't have an empire book nor am I familiar enough with the rules to be able find the answer easily.

If this is legal, how the frak would you fight it?

Ruby ring is just the fireball spell, no benefits from the character.

Yeah your friend is reading rules they want to see, not rules as written.

It is a low cast bound spell but it is a normal fireball which is cast on a unit.

Witch hunters are not that beastly for a 50pt unit! They have Sniper but for shooting, not magic.

Ask your friend to bring his book and show you where his witch hunter can choose to cast magic with the sniper rule. The only way it will be there is if they have crudely written it in!

*EDIT* However, he will retain the Killing Blow with the spell. (Just checked the faq)

Sniper effects you ballistic skill shooting.

Killing blow effects you hand to hand combat attacks that roll to wound.

Wow it keeps killing blow even though killing blow says "in close combat" haha i love GW. Does the witch hunter have ranged killing blow?

Edit: just reread empire rules and his shooting and hand to hand have killing blow. As per the faq his spells do as well, at least against the nominated character so no magic sniper but yes to magical and shooting killing blow...

I don't have my BrB with me but according to the rules for magic missiles they state "as if it was a ranged weapon". So he's still arguing it's doable on this point. Anyone have anything to refute this?

Also - I guess this is also a point I should add. The hero that will be targeted is Epidemius (nurgle demon guy) and he'll be in a unit with smaller bases than he's on. Is this a point that would change things? I haven't been able to find anything....

Taken from an Empire forum:

http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=44144.0

But the magic missile does not target the individual, it targets the unit. If he wants a sniping spell, tell him to take the ring of volans and spirit leech!

Sniper is a skill that can only be used in the shooting phase and has no part in the magic phase.

As far as base size goes, the character should be fine. As this is no template weapon, the affected will be the unit and there does not seem to be any need for a lookout sir.

However, if all of this causes some major contention, come to an agreement with the opponent and talk a way through until you come to a happy medium. Then do the same when there is a query in your favour also.

:)

It is still just a game so have fun with it!
