Using a manticore

I plan on trying a manticore lord soon in a fun list. My big problem here is on how to kit him out? Like most people I think the Manticore (as cool as it is) will die easily, as such my lord will be footslogging a lot! This to me screams to put the crown of command on him so he is usable solo, but then you limit his combat potential!

What to do?

I also love the manticore riding Lord. Sofar I haven't had very much luck with him though. What I usually do is I deploy him together with my chimera and rush them both up on one flank. I generally only get one of the monsters into combat as my opponents tend to kill the chimera as soon as they can. But, that often leaves the lord and manticore free to charge the next turn.
When in combat I try to challenge my way through all the heroes/champions in that unit until I can get supporting units in there, generally chariots or skullcrushers. It often amounts to my lord fighting on foot though so I try to keep him in the fight with at least a 2+ armoursave and 4+ ward with crown of command.
Pointswise though it's more expensive than it's probably worth, but i really love the manticore model and I will keep using it :)
I usually play with this build:
Chaos Lord
Mark of Tzeentch, Talisman of preservation, Crown of command, Flaming breath, Halberd, third eye
Manticore, Iron hard skin

You cab use the same basic ideas to protect bith the manticore rider and our beloved dp's. If fighting cannons, you can deploy them right behind trolls or a hortennse bsb to try and 'catch' the cannonball. Also it is better to play cautious with them. Take your time, hide behind buildings so you can line up the right charge. Run multiple threats like chimera, disc riders, shaggys etc to give them many threats. If going the wizard route i rekon death is the standout choice with purplesun, soulblight, doom and darkness that you can still cast from behind a building. I think the tzeentch stubborn hortennse lord is the way to go if you want to run this build only because he will attract plenty of attention. Use this to your advantage and make sure the rest of your army can support him. Skullcrushers are a good unit to keep close by as are a few chariots to protect him if he gets charged. Mantirider is risky business.
