Hi,

Im fairly new to WoC and I've been having alot of trouble with warmachines taking a fair chunk out of my troops before I can get into combat, I mainly play against DE, Orcs, and skaven.

I was thinking that a kitted out Lord on a manticore might be a good way to get back there quickly and take out the warmachines. Im playing an orc player who goes pretty warmachine heavy and was thinking of taking one with the crimson armour, a 4+ward and the stream of corruption. Any advice on how to improve on his build? Or anything I might face that could counter him ?

I think the manticore is pretty pricey. I also think a lot of people would just as easily mount a Tz Combat lord on disc (i know its becoming pretty cookie cutter and boring) for a lot less while also adding to any ward save you put on him. The combat lord alone should generally be enough to smash a lot of warmachines.

I have been tempted to try though, a Sorcerer lord on a manticore. With death magic. A lot of my opponents will put their warmachines in a line and i was thinking to try and fly out and Purple Sun across their line of warmachines (also across the initiative 2 Dwarfs or Hydras). But again it is a lot of points to invest. I guess i could also put him on the Flying carpet item (50pts) to give him flying but i'd rather spend item points on other stuff. But the manticore could help if i need/get into combat.

I'd have no qualms about throwing 6 dice at a large purple sun if it had the potential to take out a few warmachines and more. The Infernal puppet is pretty standard in my army list to soften the blow of Irresistable Force/Miscast.

A manticore is a bit of over kill for war machine hunting. Frankly, in a heavy warmachine environment, you are more likely to find the manticore shot out from underneath the lord, leaving him on foot. At T5, 4 wounds, no armor save, normal shooting will likely do the trick pretty quickly.

As nzkoston suggests, characters on disks are one of our better answers to warmachines.

An alternative to being cookie-cutter is a lord on a steed of slaanesh! Add in the Golden Eye for extreme shooting protection. Far more interesting and slightly more fun to paint and model. Faster too! And exactly the same cost (magical items notwithstanding).

I agree using a Manticore for warmachine hunting is overkill and expensive.

All I've tried with the Manticore is using Chaos Lord w/ two hand weapons and mark of khorne and few magic items. I've had success using him as a lord killer or using him in conjunction with another block to break large units by going for a flank or rear attack.

As for dealing with war machines; WOC can usually sustain a few rounds of shooting from a war machine as long as you are moving your army forward to engage in close combat. I use chaos warhounds or marauder horsemen to take out warmachines

You can't use two hand weapons while mounted.

Yes, you are right. I looked back at the list I ran...it was mark of Khorne with an Ogre Blade.

I found the unit effective at killing a Skaven Exalted Vermin Lord.
