Hello everyone!

our warshrines are the most interesting choice available if you ask me.

but how are they the best?

A warshrine (or preferably 2) is a key component in pulling off the Tzeentch Chosen-star unit. My belief is that if you bring chosen to the table you better be packing a shrine or two as well.

Aside from that, it is also one tough cookie to crack. With its toughness of 6, its 4 plus armor save and 4 plus ward save (3 plus if it has MoT) it is bloody hard for opponents to hurt. Just keep it away from things that will beat it badly on combat resolution as it is not stubborn. Tying up enemy monsters is a great use for it. The warshrine won't kill the enemies big baddies but it won't be dying anytime soon either.

Lastly, it can be used as a shield against cannons in the first turn. Just simply place your hellcannon, or disk sorcerer, etc behind the warshrine. Since the warshrine is classified as a monster, as long as the cannonball does not kill it, the cannon ball is immediately stopped and won't hit the unit you are protecting behind it.

Agreed on the points above, and would also add that it can play an important role in clearing chaff units/scouts, especially skirmishers that are only Stubborn in forests. 5 WS4, S 4 attacks won't worry any serious gribbly, but it will make life seriously difficult for a unit of skinks, most Light Cav, or even small units of Dwarf Miners.

Give it the Mark of Tzeentch and you've got a 3+ ward buffing machine. :D

Unless I am running Chosen or maybe Knights with a character, the buffing element is just too random to be of much good. Especially as the statistically most likely results are the weaker options.

well, only the insanity result is really 'bad', other results like +1 attack are less desirable but still pretty good

Statisticlly 6, 7 and 8 are the most likely results and these are +1 Armour, nothing and Magic Resist, none of which are going to make the Warshrine worth its points.

Agreeing with conjoy here - I think the Warshrine only comes into its own as a Chosen-star enabler, though it does have the ability to hold monsters (or any unit that doesn't generate much static combat resolution) still for a good amount of time.
