2500 Tournament List Needs Help; First tournament, list needs tweaking

I'm going to my first tournament a couple months from now, and have been practicing with a buddy, who is usually the only person I play against. He plays Dark Elves, so my list used to be tailored towards them, but I'm trying to even it out so it will fare well against other armies.

I've played two games so far with this list (won one, lost one) and I still think it needs some tweaking. Any help would be great!

Lvl. 4 Sorcerer on a Disc, Talisman of Preservation, Puppet, Enchanted Shield- 395 pts

BSB (Tzeentch), Dragonhelm, Dawnstone- runs with Tzeentch warriors- 190 pts

Lvl. 1 Sorcerer, Dispel Scroll, Third Eye- 135 pts
After these last games, I will be putting the sorcerer on a disc.

Warriors x16 (Nurgle, Lvl. 1 Sorcerer has been in this block, but will be on disc from now on), BoRage, Halberds, Shields- 349 pts

Warriors x17 (Tzeentch with BSB), Shields, Hand weapons, Rapturous Standard- 324 pts

Marauder Horsemen x6 (Slaanesh), Flails, Throwing Spears, standard bearer & musician- 124 pts

Warhounds x5- 30 pts
Warhounds x5- 30 pts

Chariot (Khorne)- 150 pts

Knights x5 (Khorne)- standard bearer & musician- 260 pts

Hellcannon- 205 pts

Warshrine (Tzeentch)- 150 pts
Warshrine (Tzeentch)- 150 pts

Total: 2492 pts

To help you help me, from all the games that I've played:

-the Sorcerer does great (Puppet has won me games)
-the BSB dies fairly quick (forced to challenge, gets beaten)
-the Lvl 1. is usually a Lvl 2. on a disc and dies quick (easy bolt thrower target)
-I have a hard time getting my warriors into combat but they fare well when they finally get there (if magic hasn't been too rough)
-my horsemen actually do very well for me, usually redirecting units and harassing them, or taking out bolt throwers and saving my sorcerer
-I'm not sure what to do with my warshrines but I usually use them to hold up strong units
-my hellcannon constantly dies turn 1 (FREE AT LAST!)

Thanks for the advice, and I'll be checking back often for help!

I know what you mean on the tailoring thing; I regularly play HE and it's hard not to tailor my list just to beat him! Allcomers is where it's at ;)

My 2cents on your list:

BSB NEEDS a wardsave! Talisman of endurance will help him survive a lot longer. Give him a shield as well as the dragon helm and he'll have a 2+, 4++ save. Much better than a re-rollable 3+!

If you are gonna put your level1 sorcerer on a disc give him the goldeneye. Will help him survive longer.

Try and bump nurgle warriors up to 18 strong. No need for a champion in the unit if no characters are going in it.

I would trim the marauder horsemen down to 5 and lose the standard. You want then cheap and cheerful as they won't last long anyhow!

Not convinced on the mark of khorne for the chariot: 30pts for 2 attacks seems a bit steep to me. I would lose it and either leave unmarked or mark it slannesh. How has it been working out for you though?

The knights don't need a standard in a unit this small. I would lose it and just keep the musician.

Oh the hellcannon! So many people love them; I used to run 2, then 1 and now none! I just find them to random for my liking. However many people love them so if you wanna keep it go ahead, but if it keeps letting you down just chuck it. You can get a lot for it's points.

And lastly the warshrines. In my opinion they are only worth it if you are doing 1 of 2 things: Either using them in conjunction with chosen to create a deathstar unit, or when manipulating rolls on a unit containing a character with favour of the gods. Your list doesn't contain either of these so I don't really see the point of them in this list, sorry! I think you'd be better served either dropping them or re-thinking your primary use for them.

Hope that helps..... sort of ;)

I more or less agree on all the points made by ga.
Especially regarding the Warshrines, you only take two if you are really trying to bump Chosen (or maybe Knights). The only other role I can see which would only require one, is as an extra line of defence against Cannons shooting at your Helcannon. In all other circumstances a Chariot would be a better use for your points.
Also would reiterate dropping Khorne on your Chariot. The last thing you want a unit designed for clearing chaff units is a requirement to overrun. Go Sl or unmarked.

Slightly disagreements:
I like the Standard over the Musician on my Knights.
Can see why you take 6 Horsemen and Standard.
Would strongly suggest dropping Nurgle from the Warriors, making them Khorne and takign the Flaming Banner. Hydras, HPAs and the Grave Guard Deathstar all hurt a lot, and you'll want Flaming in there to counteract.

Assuming you do decide to drop the Warshrines and the MoK from your Chariot, I would suggest another combat block. Marauders either as Khorne with Great Weps in the usual Horde or Tz with shields as an anvil (running 5x8). You'll find either block will pull a LOT of shooting away from your Warriors. I would actually take the 4+ off the Lvl 4 and give it to the BSB. Also give the BSB the Iron Curse icon and put him in the Marauders and if they are the Tz variety they have a 5+ from Warmachines and 5+ parry in combat. UBER!

Neither Sorc on a Disc should need the 4+ ward. You can give them 4+ from shooting with the MoTz and Golden Eye and Talis of Endurance.

Final suggestions: If you can fit it in, the Gift Blood Curdling Roar is very effective at plinking wounds off an unkillable Dreadlord, cavalry or monsters.
Similarly, Stream of Corruption can be very good on your BSB in finishing off a challenge to deny an opponent the chance to hit back.

The chariot has worked wonders! Consistently knocking out half/whole units. I could afford to lose the mark though; I see what you're saying there.

Thanks for the BSB advice. He'll make it through a couple more turns now.

And yes! Something I keep forgetting is giving my Warriors flaming attacks. Thanks for the reminder.

Interesting that you say neither Disc needs the 4+. I've sent my Lvl 4 Disc into some SCARY units when I've needed to hold them up, and that sucker just doesn't die. Ties them up so I can get another unit in on the flank. Like I said, the Lvl 4 rarely sees the graveyard. Can you explain why I shouldn't give the Disc Lord a 4+?

Good to know about those Gifts. I'll look at them more!

Thanks for all the advice. Hope to hear back from y'all.

I had assumed you were not using him for combat at all.
If you are, I would consider one of the cheap Magic Weapons so he can also do a job against Ethreals and Stream of Corruption would also boost his combat credentials.
Another nice option would be Blood Curdling Roar on the second Disc rider. Its almost mandatory for if you think you may face the DElf unkillable Dreadlord and its quite nice for plinking wounds on Monsters or Cavalry.
