1000pt khorne; need help with hero

My hero in the first game was:
MoK, talisman of preservation, enchanted shield
he was killed in a challenge against a nurgle hero with Regen and great weapon. I think it was mostly due to lucky dice.

I changed my hero in the second game:
MoT, talisman of preservation, great weapon
He did nothing because my enemy removed models in base contact before he had a chance to swing, he did, however, not take a single wound.

I am really stumped on how to equip my hero. I like him on foot, at least in 1k pts so I'm keeping him in the warrior unit. It might be better for him to have more offensive equipment and attempt to slay numerous opponents instead of being defensive, especially since its hard to find strong melee enemy characters (most are weak, wizards, or stay away from my hero).

With a list like mine, what would you all suggest? The runesword is looking pretty nice, but im afraid I will die with only a 3+ armour save.

Thoughts/suggestions on the list and hero? I haven't fought a heavy shoots army yet, but I feel like with 20 warriors and 2 units of deadly knights the enemy simply wont be able to kill them all before I get to them.

First off how about having your opponent following the rule that says casualties come from the back of the unit like it's told to be done in the rulebook.

I wouldn't worry about dying with a 3+ since you only fail armour save on a 1 or 2 unless they have a higher strength to make you save on a 4 or higher because of the strength negating the 3+ you would normally have or if they have a weapon which ignores armour saves all together.

If I was to make a 1000 point list based on what you have showing right now it would be:

Exalted Hero- Charmed Shield, Sword of Might, MoK

17 Chaos Warriors- Halberds, Shields, Full Command, MoK

5 Chaos Knights- Standard Bearer, MoK

5 Chaos Knights- Standard Bearer, MoK

Now I dropped two Warriors off the main unit since with the hero added their 18 strong which is a fairly optimal amount for Khorne ones with halberds you would have them 6 wide I also gave them shields to up their save to a 3+ so they could survive longer from shooting but once they hit combat it's back to 4+ because of the halberds.

I also gave both Chaos Knights standards so you have more for the blood and glory scenario in the rulebook.

That left 151 points which was enough to fit an exalted with charmed shield and a sword of might with one point spare you'll also notice I ignored a ward save for now but you could drop both knights standards to fit one in which would leave you with 12 points if you went with talisman of preservation.
