Marauders of Tzeentch with HWS works for me. The 5+ ward and a serious numbers advantage will wittle down swordmasters. They are rough in combat, but at T3 and wearing only heavy armor, if they aren't immune to magic, fireballs solve that problem. If they are, a good hellcannon shot helps. My HE are usually outnumbered so you'll also get a good idea of where they deploy and react accordingly. Also, a dispell scroll and getting some MR also could help. It's tough not to tool your army specifically for beating elves but if you can mitigate their magic, you can do the same for pretty much every other army out there. I agree that Slann are WAY worse than HE mages, but that, like so many things, is my opinion.

If you are struggling with the Lore of Metal there is always Marauders with Great Weapons. You can buy 3 for the cost of a Swordmaster too.

I always thought High Elves struggled to build a balanced army. Stepping up punishes them hard.

That would be true, except for how Stubborn and S6 made White Lions amazing. If you're not fielding an MSU-style list with High Elves, they're doubling up on the WL's, because they do what most Hordes do, only on fast-forward.
