Warriors are the only core unit I care to use (other than warhounds which dont count). I've been toying around with different lists from 1000pts to 2500pts. I came up with this idea and wanted to see how others felt about it as I'm sure someone has tried it. In 2500pts I need 625pts worth of Core. My army is Khorne, I use FC and Halberds. A unit of 35 Warriors with FC, MoK, and Halberds is 620pts. Obviously I could have 2 units of 20ish or 1 unit of 40ish. I think 1 unit would be better, especially if I'm going to put a BSB in the unit. This was my idea: 35 Warriors - FC, Banner of Rage, Halberds. Exalted Hero - BSB, Crown of Command. There's no point giving the Hero MoK (and I don't want to give it other marks). The BSB has 15pts left to spend on gear, this doesn't provide many defensive or offensive options. I am thinking about giving him Steam of Corruption for 2 purposes: 1) Just in case there is a durable enemy that threatens my BSB (other heros, hopefully no lords). 2) If nothing else, this is still an average of 7 s3 hits. This unit will be set up 6x6 to provide as much damage potential to the front, flanks, and rear. This unit is stubborn on Ld 8(9) and will remain frenzied even after losing a fight. My questions are: 1) Can my unit champion issue/accept a challenge BEFORE my BSB? 2) Will this actually work? Or will the BSB most likely die before his Stubborness actually benefits my unit. 3) How would you advise setting up your Core without using Marauders (many units of warriors or 1 big one?) Thanks! |

I think that if this unit needs to be Stubborn, you have likely already lost the game even if you hold. 750 points of frenzied killers should be winning combat, or they should be Steadfast. Additionally, anything that can inflict enough damage on you to beat you in combat can easily kill the BSB. I could maybe see using a Stubborn BSB in a massive Marauder horde, but this unit should put out more damage and take fewer casualties than Marauders. At that size, the unit really should have mark of Tzeentch to go with the Banner of Rage. One save pays for the mark, and you will likely make a few 6+ wards. 1) Yes, you choose who among eligible models does the issuing or accepting of challenges. You just have to do it with one eligible model. |

That is a good point, this is a khorne army, so MoT is out of the question. |

I would consider just marking them Khorne and picking another banner. As previously mentioned, you won't be too worried about losing combat (and therefore frenzy) if you use your support units well. This lets you get another cool banner on them. Flame maybe in case there are regen monsters around, swiftness to give you some mobility, or my fav... Blasted Standard. The biggest danger I see with this unit is your opponent will just avoid it/block it with chaff and go about picking off your support units to out-point you for the win. Seriously, who wants to go toe-to-toe with this :o Edited by sometimesafish, Dec 25 2011, 12:41 AM.

Also, you've got the threat of template spells and artillery. I regularly play against an Empire player, and I've had to reduce the size of my warrior units to limit the damage from mortars and cannons. I'd be inclined to divide them into two smaller units, but deploy them next to each other, to keep them both in the BSB bubble. I'd either give the BSB a banner that would help both - Doom Totem, maybe? - or give some extra protection. |
