I like the Book if running a Chaos Lord and light magic, on BSB saves points on characters and lets you get a dispel scroll and infernal puppet with a lvl 2. If have lvl 4 sorcerer i forgo the book. But our characters get expensive so versatility is the key.

That's all it is, of course the Book is less useful when a level 4 is in play, but if you want characters to be as efficient as possible the Book is an amazing tool. Coupled with Third Eye and a Scroll, we've got a strong offense/defense built into a character that is already needed without purchasing an extra Wizard.

I have concidered running a Level 2 with Puppet & Enchanted Shield as the general joining some Tzeentch Warriors with +1 LD Banner and the BSB with Book/Scroll. The Character points spent would be minimal, meaning lots of extra points for strong combat troops.

I have used an exalted bsb with book of secrets, scroll, and third eye of tzeench in addition to my Sorc Lord to great effect. As Furgil said it fills the second wizard, and much needed scroll, very nicely for very few additional points. With a shield the BSB is still ws 7 with a 3+/5++, and if you use a warshrine it is very easy to make him 2+/5++, which is pretty great protection overall.

ps. round 3 at lonewolf Furgil?! make it a rubberband type match :D

Can you take a scroll and another arcane item still? I thought that was one of the things they ditched in 8th ed

That they did, but the Book of Secrets isn't an Arcane Item, it's an Enchanted Item.
