What do you think a unit of 10 provides? What can a unit of 10 do that two units of 5 each cannot?
The normal value of dogs is purely to get killed. 5 dogs die just as well as 10 dogs.

i usually run them in blocks of 5. But i guess putting them in 10's gives you a little longer to wait before a panic test is needed to be rolled. But not very long. I usually have 4 units of 5 hounds in a 2k game. Gives the enemy more targets that they have to shoot.

2 units of 5 are:

2 trash units in deployment (a little more chance not to be outdeployed)
2 trash units for redirects and speedbumps
2 trash units to shoot at per round so 2nd enemy unit won't be shooting at something more important
2 trash units to send on enemy warmachines so maybe 1 will get there.

so in my humble opinion 2x5 hounds are 2 times more usefull than 1x10 unit.

Dogs are run in 5s. You're going to throw them in there to die anyway.

the thing to remember is if you spam too many you run low on deployment space and you wont be getting the +1 to go first

The +1 to going first isn't worth it. You're much better off finding out where your opponent is planning to hit you and deploying accordingly.

I wouldn't worry about the +1 as much as the fact that they take up a lot of space in your deployment zone. Depending on the deployment rules that can really screw you over.

yeah i have found that sometimes the 2 - 3 inches from the deployment line that you place your main units behind the dogs can really make a difference into the turn in which you engage in close combat. But i guess that is offset by the models you save from dying to shooting attacks.

4 units of Dogs shouldn't impinge much on how much space you have right at the 12" line. It's only 20 of the 72 inches you have available to you. Even assuming you lose 10 of those to random terrain features, you'd still have enough room for 10-wide Marauders, 3 squads of 6-wide Warriors, some 5-wide Knights. Not seeing how this is a problem.

Remember each unit takes an additional inch arround them in each dirrections due to the fact that units have to be an inch appart. I have also had situations where people wont shoot the hounds so they clutter up charges.

I kept that in mind. 20 + 10 + 10 + 18 + 5 + 9 = 72.
