Iīm not really used to play Beasts, normally always playing Mortals or VC, but this weekend Iīm up against an old friend of mine & I wanted to give him a surprise, so Iīve painted alot of beastmen this week & came up with this list: Beastlord: Great Weapon, Armour of Damnation, Horn of the Great Hunt, MOCU, Genaral. 161 Wargor: Great Weapon, Chaos Armour, Dark Heart, Mark of Khorne. 134 Shaman: lvl 2, Staff of Darkoth, Powerstone, MOCU. 160 Shaman: lvl 2, Braystaff, Goretooth, Dispelscroll, MOCU. 166 Core: Beastherd: 16 Gors, 8 Ungors: Full command. 179 Beastherd: 16 Gors, 8 Ungors: Full command. 179 Beastherd: 9 Gors, 7 Ungors: Champion, musician. 116 17 Bestigors: Full Command, Warbanner. 259 17 Khorngors: Full Command, Mark of Khorne. 279 8 Chaos Hounds. 48 6 Chaos Hounds. 36 2 Chariots. 170 Special: 5 Centigors: Spear, l. armour, shield, throwing axes, musician. 117 5 Minotaurs: Great Weapon, Standard, Champion, MOCU. 270 Rare: 1 Chaos Giant: Mutant Monstrosity (mostly used because itīs a new model & because I want something he will target all his shooting & magic against). 225 Total: 2499 # of Powerdice: 6 # of Dispeldice: 6 I will be fighting either VC or HE (he has 2 armies both of which is almost 3000 points) Battleplan: Iīm planning on doing a wave attack, w. the minotaurs, chariots & Khorngors going in first, then try some flanking w. the hounds & Centigors, whilst the Bestigors, ambushers & other units mop up the survivors. The rest is not really done yet as I donīt know what Iīm up against & I havenīt got any advice from you other guys yet! But 2 of the beastherds (1 big & the small) will begin the game in ambush, the Shaman w. powerstone & Staff of Darkoth will join the big unit, trying to use his powerstone to get off the spell in the staff so I can charge directly when the unit enters. |

I like it and it will probably be effective, but i would swirch the powerstone for a despell because HE and VC both rely on magic |

I have the powerstone so it will be easier to use his staff, by luring out dispeldice before casting the spell, having 8 powerdice allows me to cast about 3 spells instead of 2 in that turn... |

I know, but he usually has about 7-10 powerdice & with 6 dispeldice I will stop the vital spells, but as I always play Khorne he will have no magic defense in mind at all... A single dispelscroll wonīt change that very much... |

Thats ture; magic has been severly handicapped in 6th Edition. But it can still hurt your army, perhaps fatally. Even the death of one key unit could disrupt your battle plan and give a win to your opponent. But no, a scroll won't halt too much of his magic. |

Biased Towards Beasts

horn of the great hunt and the gaze of gods are both talismans, so you need to drop 1. I'd drop both for the crown of horns. Beasts are low ld so theres a real possibility that you'll fail tests every now and again. You don't want your general turned into a spawn. Instead of making rallying a large potential hazard, you make yourself better at it. Give him armour of damnation as well so he's unlikely to die. Your herds are huge. I'd keep them down around 20 models (I never use any bigger since it tends to reduce your charge range). Also, you're going Gor heavy, but thats just wasting points. You'll never need more than 10 gors in a herd (they're only for combat and you'll have a frontage of 6-7 max, meaning you want to be more combat effective with ungors in further rounds, so you want their spears in the second rank). Also, toughness against shooting can only be argued if less than 25% of your unit is ungors, since there's still enough to die and cause panic tests. I'd drop the command from the minotaurs and the 5th minotaur, since your unit will be hard to maneuver. With those points, and the points from your herds, you should almost have enough for another 3 minos with great weapons. I also think the goretooth is a little overrated, and a dispell scroll might be better there, but alot of people like it so this could go either way. |

I didnīt think of them both beeing Talismans, youīre right about that, will use armour of damnation instead, which is almost as useful.... I donīt want to waste too many points on my characters, therefore he has to be satisfied with what he got. I want the horn as I really want my ambushing units to be able to be where I want them to be, the difference between LD7 & LD8 is huge! The reason why my herds numbers 20+ is because I might go up against VC & having small units losing because of fear isnīt very funny... Iīm using 5 minoturs w. command as I want this unit to be able to take care of anything in their path, not just being a support unit. & weīre playing on a ping pong board so I donīt worry about these guys being hard to maneuover, they got plenty of space! The Goretooth might be overrated, Iīve never used it, but I like the idea of turning my shaman into a combat monster aswell, giving me a little edge in combat, you might be right but I like to see how it goes before changing my mind on this little item, trying out things is how you learn which things work best. |

Keep the beastherds big if up against VC, but using such a big group of minotaurs does surprise me & I wouldnīt do it. I like your idea about the Powerstone, getting a charge with ambushing units in the 2:nd round is quite a surprise, which may even win you the game. I like the Goretooth, but sometimes it does disappoint me, adding a dispelscroll, spellfamiliar or even a powerstone instead of the Goretooth might be more rewarding. |

Biased Towards Beasts

By all means. I agree completely.
4 minotaurs will generally deal with anything in its path, and if you could fit in that 2nd small unit, you'd be further insulated from fear. The reason I suggest this and small units against even VCs is that I see beasts as an army of units which are rarely 1 on 1 champions, but they have the speed and maneuverability to set up combined charges against nearly any army. A beast herd should never be in a situation where it's the only unit charging a block of infantry (except for the occasional rear charge). But tell me how the army works. Try the link in my sig if you want to goto an all beasts forum btw. |

Well I played the game & my friend was really surprised, but he surprised me aswell, trying to use a magic lite (atleast for elves) Highelf army using many core troops: Hero: Armour of the Gods, Halberd,Longbow, Pure of Heart (this was the one that became his general). 114 Hero: Radiant Gem of Hoeth, Heavy armour, Halberd, shield, Longbow. 135 Hero: mage, level 2 Upgrade, Seer, Silverwand, Elven Steed. 182 Hero: mage, level 2 Upgrade, Ring of Fury, Jewel of Dusk. 175 Core: 20 Spearmen: Full Command. 250 20 Spearmen: Full Command. 250 20 Spearmen: Full Command. 250 10 Archers: 120 20 Spearmen: Full Command, Warbanner. 270 5 Silverhelms: Heavy armour, shields, champion, musician. 136 Special: 5 Ellyrian Reavers: Bows & spears, musician. 122 5 Ellyrian Reavers: Bows & spears, musician. 122 2 Chariots: 170 Rare: 2 Bolt throwers: 200 Total: 2496 He was trying out some new tactic that would let him dictate the battles & where they would be or something like that, so he didnīt like that for starters my army was almost as fast as his (not the slow marauders & warriors) & he was very surprised by the fact that I used magic. I used Lore of Shadows, rolled good; meaning that I got 3 different movementspells! The game started with both of us trying to maneouver our troops into better positions, he was using some magic I dispelled the worst spells, he dispelled all my spells etc. etc. He fired at my minotaurs, killing off one of them. Second turn began with me getting my ambushers where I wanted the, 1 unit each behind each of his boltthrowers. the magicphase began, I lured out some dispeldice with my first movementspell, the second came & he dispelled tehn came the third using my Powerstone, which meant he had no dispeldice & I rolled succesfully, so my big beastherd which had been in ambush charged his boltthrower, overran it into the rear of his spearmen unit with warbanner, slughtering them in the third round. Rest of the game just saw his other boltthrower get crushed, all his spearmen died (the giant killed one of the units singlehandedly), at the end of the game he only had his reavers, silverhelms & his 2 mages, whilst I had only lost a single beastherd & 2 of my minotaurs & some Ungors from shooting... So the battle was a successful one & maybe next time when Iīm playing my usual Khornate army he will have some dispelscrolls (hopefully). I do have to admit that I was a bit more lucky than him, his list was unusual & that if he had known about my powerstone trick he would have saved his dice for that spell instead of the first movement spell (meaning that this trick probably canīt be done twice against the same opponent). |

nice one Snyggejygge, and congratulations! it's always nice to see those HE get a little punch ;) but I've seen HE armies with less magic (even played a couple of battles where my opponent didn't use ANY magic, but that was only about 1000 pts. or something like that). |

Yeah Ivé seen less aswell, but for most games of 2000+ points, Highelf players like to use a wizardlord with Book of Hoeth a level 2 wizard (usually with Ring of Fury/Corin & jewel of Dusk), a hero with Gem of Hoeth & a battlestandard with banner of battle, aswell as a unit that has the banner of sorcery: meaning they usually get a total of 10+D3 Powerdice, have a bound spell & most doubles is Irresistable force. & with 6 Dispeldice they controll the magicphase very well... |
