BSB's and the Last Stand Rule

So, my roommate and I were looking at the rulebook during our last game, and we came across a passage in the rulebook that I hope we are reading wrong. On page 107, under The Battle Standard Bearer Model, it says
"Unlike normal standard bearers, the battle standard is lost when the bearer is slain-other models cannot pick it up, even if they are in the same unit. As with other standard bearers, the battle standard bearer is automatically killed if he flees from combat

So, does this mean if you have a BSB in a unit, and they lose combat and break, even if he still had his starting number of wounds, he is removed as a casualty from the game? Because holy crap, that changes my strategies with them A LOT!

Yeah, unfortunately that is true....the thought process is that he stands and defends the Standard to the death...which is understandable, but losing him due to fleeing sucks! Especially with the amount of points he costs....

Just means you should bunker him in a big, not easily broken unit.

that is totally true about losing the bsb if he flees, a great tactic is bunker him with the rapturous standard

Yep, completely true that if the unit turns tail, the BSB goes down automatically. Gotta be careful with him...

that is why you will normally find my bsb in with 14 chosen. kitted with a 3+ ward and stream of corruption for the edge in any combat that is a bit tough. hopefully the buff from the shrine gives him and the chosen a +1 toughness. nothing worse than loosing your bsb when a unit flees

This is the negative that had to be included when we gained the amazing bonus from the BSB being able to re-roll all Leadership Tests, but he didn't cost any extra points.

Protect him and make sure he never breaks from combat. It is a reasonable plan to have a Crown of Command wearer in the same unit as the BSB, just in case the unit loses combat by a large amount.

Put him on a Disk and not into combat, then you never lose him. Just make sure he has that 3+WS.

Alright, thanks for all the prompt replies. If he breaks from combat, he is down. He is still allowed to choose flee as a charge reaction, though, right?

yes it states somewhere that if your bsb is fleeing its a good idea to rally him first.

Banner bearers only die when they break and flee from combat, not when they flee for any other reason. :)
