ok, as you might have guessed this was inspired by Ghurkal's New Conquest. It's a pity I too have decided to besiege undivided, but there are only 3 powers present at equantis (khorne, lagoth and undivided). I couldn't imagine Khorne defending in a siege, and I don't know enough about the Lagothians to really write fluff about them, so...

without further ado, here's the story!

Karl rode at the head of his army on his barded steed. His army had grown alot during the past few weeks. That was no surprise, because the war gave many casualties that could be summoned. During nearly every hour since his arrival on the island his necromancers had been awakening those who had fallen, and as a result his army now numbered in the thousands. Today was the day that he would assault the castle of his biggest thread, a great undivided force. He was hoping to assault the castle very fast, so that many men would still be resting or even sleeping. That would spare him lots of troubles, but if somehow his enemy would be prepared for his coming, his force would be in for a siege. He had ordered to build rams three days ago, and they looked solid. There were at least five present in his army, so it wouldn’t be a problem to destroy the gates. They were made of strong trees, cut free of any branches, and equipped with an iron tip, in the shape of a dragon’s head.

It was cold and the sun had just set. The wind blew hard and made a chill go down Bokan’s spine. He and four other mounted marauders were to patrol the area around their castle tonight. Bokan thought of his home, and of how terrible the journey here had been. Of the seven great undivided ships that had departed in this direction, only three had ever reached this shore. After that, everything had gone a little better, they had gained a lot of followers, and were thus able to capture this big castle after a bloody fight with the former occupants, the blackskinned elves. Many armies had tried to conquer the castle after that, but so far all had failed. Bokan looked up to see a big full moon shine above him, that would make it a bit easier to spot hidden enemies in the many woods and bushes that surrounded the castle’s killing ground. He looked forward again and saw that the others had gone ahead of him a bit, so he spurred his horse to catch up with them. At the moment he had reached them, one of them whispered:
-‘Look! What’s that?!’
Bokan looked in the direction that his companion was pointing and saw many heavily armoured warriors. At first he thought it was a Khornate army, because many of them were wearing red. But then he saw that most banners were decorated with a dragon, and that there were warriors wearing many different colours of armour. He didn’t know what to make of it, untill he noticed the tall man riding in front of this army, clad in bronze armour and mounted atop a heavily barded steed. A terrified look appeared on Bokan’s face and he said:
-‘Undead! To the castle, quick!’
He turned his horse and was glad to see the others followed his example.

As Karl looked up from a conversation with Gunther Spiezer, his second-in command, he saw five lightly armoured scouts speeding away from him, clearly having spotted his army mere seconds before. Karl cursed and ordered his personal bodyguard to come with him. They rode as fast as they could to catch up with the marauders, but to no avail. The heavily armoured horses of Karl’s retinue were no match for the light marauders, and soon they had gone out of sight. Karl sighed and thought: ‘Well, what hope I had in a surprise attack is now lost, and I will have to face the rest of the journey with the thread of being ambushed.’ He waited for the rest of his army to catch up, and then continued.

When Bokan had reached the castle, he dismounted and ran towards the chamber of his master. He knocked on the door and a voice from inside said:
-‘What do you want?’
-‘A great undead host is coming this way, lord!’
-‘What do you say? Come in!’
Bokan opened the door cautiously, he had never been in his master’s room before, and entered.
-‘What did you just tell me?’
-‘There’s a great undead army coming this way, milord, they’re equiped for a siege!’
-‘How do you know this?’
-‘I was on patrol duty tonight, sir, and we saw them coming, they should be here in less then an hour’
-‘Ok, take your position on the walls, I will order the rest of the army to do the same’
-‘Yes, milord’
Bokan bowed and walked out of the room backwards. He walked back to his horse and took his sword and shield. He climbed the wall and took up his position about twenty feet from the gate. Seconds later he could here a voice screaming:
-‘Man the walls! Prepare for battle!’

Karl sat on his horse, cautiously watching the environment, looking for signs of movement or anything else that could indicate an ambush. To his left a branch broke, but it was just Gunther’s horse. Behind him he could hear a weapon being drawn, but it was just one of his servants. Then there happened nothing for several minutes, until Karl heard sudden movement in the woods to his right. He quickly chanted a spell and sent it flying towards the sounds. Out of the bushes rolled a dead rabbit. And so the journey continued until they could see the castle appeared in front of them from behind the tall trees.

It took at least half an hour before the castle was fully prepared, because most of the men had been sleeping, and everyone had to put on his armour. In the meanwhile Bokan had been given some small stones that he was supposed to throw upon his enemies, and some ten feet away from him a pot of oil was being heated up. Bokan looked around as behind him the heavy cavalry positioned theirselves ready for a countercharge if the gate was to collapse. He was confident, nobody could stand against the charge of the elite of the chaos army. He was also glad to see that his master took up position near to him, he was sure that none of the undeath servants would be able to hurt him. He looked forward and saw that the vampire and his minions were nearing, their banners flapping wildly in the strong wind. It was an eerie sight to behold, hundreds upon hundreds of unliving soldiers whose armour reflected the big moon. He watched as the skeletons encircled them, moving as one, controlled by a single mind. Regiment after regiment of the unholy beings formed the lines, and Bokan’s heart was filled with fear. Right in front of the gate were no doubt the best fighters in the whole unliving army, and they carried big rams, that looked quite capable of bringing down the gate. Bokan looked behind him again, and as he saw the thirty or so cavalry men, he feared that it wouldn’t be enough to stop this huge army.

Karl looked at the castle. About threehundred men manned the walls, most of them wearing thick armour. At certain points along the wall he could see the smoke of hot oil rising up in the light of the many present torches. The gate looked strong, entirely made out of black iron and surely reïnforced from behind it. He could also sense that there were magicians inside the fortress, but they would be no match for Karl and his necromancers. He ordered his army to encircle the castle, with his most decent troops facing the gate, bearing the rams. Karl himself would wait with his elite bodyguard until the gate was breached, and then storm in the courtyard to slay any survivors and assault the defenders of the walls in the back. His army had now encircled the castle entirely, and Karl gave the order to attack.

Bokan gripped his sword extra tight as he saw the undead advance. No battle cry could be heard, just complete silence, which was probably more terrifying then any battle cry could have been. He was glad to hear the booming voice of his lord breaking the silence:
-‘Hear me, followers of the dark gods! We have together defeated the great seas between our homeland and this island, we have together taken this castle, so now we shall defend it together! Do not let fear guide your hand, but the will of the dark gods! Tonight we will please them, and we will show them that we do not know fear!’
All yelled in agreement, and Bokan looked eagerly to the slowly advancing enemy. He would slay the vile creatures one by one, and chaos would prevail like it had always done.

Karl watched as the circle around the castle grew smaller and smaller, until they were within the reach of the stones of the defenders. Some skeletons fell but were easily resurrected by the necromancers. Then as one they raised their ladders and began climbing them. Now the defenders began pouring boiling oil over them, and the skeletons fell faster then the necromancers could raise. The skeletons that did make it to the top of their ladder were easily cut down by those awaiting them. At the gate the undead were faring better, as there were already two rams slamming into it time and time again. Here too the defenders threw stones at the skeletons but these were a lot better armoured, and they held their shields above their heads to protect them from anything the defenders threw at them.

Bokan knocked yet another skeleton off the ramparts and already the next one was almost at the top.
-‘How many are there after this?’ he asked to himself, while parrying the clumsy attempts of the skeleton to wound him. He cleaved his sword through the creature’s neck and threw it down the ladder, so it took several others with him. He looked to his right at the gate and saw the heavily armoured skeletons with rams. With a lot of noice they brought down the ram upon the gate again, but so far it held firm, showing no sign of weakness yet. Bokan turned his attention back to his own position when there came another skeleton at the top. Bokan heaved his sword and let it come crashing down on the skeleton’s helmet. He looked to his left, and saw that everywhere it was the same story, with pitiful attempts of skeletons to get a foothold on the walls, but being thrown back by the loyal servants of the dark gods.

Karl still watched at the siege. It wasn’t going as good as he had hoped for, nowhere his servants had really driven the chaos warriors back, and the gate still stood. Around him his elite bodyguard was doing nothing, Karl wanted to storm in and kill everything in his path, but as long as the gate held he couldn’t do anything while on his horse. He looked again at the ongoing battle, and saw that now the pots of oil were almost depleted, but there was still no progress to be seen in the achievements of the skeletons. He rode towards the gate and ordered his bodyguard to follow him. When he was within twenty metres of the big iron doors he dismounted and moved together with his now also dismounted bodyguard towards the rams. He pushed aside several skeletons and ordered his bodyguard to man the rams. The last of the oil was thrown over them, but they protected theirselves with their shields and armour. Those that did fall were resurrected by Karl and stood up to man the rams again. Karl began muttering a very ancient text, and the ram slammed into the gate. Nothing happened. Karl began to speak louder, and again the ram slammed into the gate, this time the sound of tired iron could be heard, but the gate still held! Karl chanted, and the ram slammed into the gate once more. Iron could be heard breaking, and the big doors were almost down. Karl kept on chanting, louder and louder, and for the forth time the rams slammed into the gate. This time the gates came crashing down and Karl finished his spell in a loud crescendo. At the moment that the gates fell, hundreds of spirits appeared out of nothing and attacked the chaos knights that wanted to charge Karl and his bodyguard. The knights tried to attack the spirits, but their weapons just passed straight through them. In return the spirits slashed back at the knights, felling them with the greatest of ease. Meanwhile Karl and his men stormed inside, and quickly killed any resistance they met.

Bokan still fought the enemies off the walls, but he knew it was futile. The foul creatures had already destroyed the gates, and the knights behind it had been killed by some evil magic. Another skeleton came up the ladder, and Bokan pierced it’s chest with his sword, before knocking the next skeleton off the wall with his shield. But before he could rest a moment yet another skeleton made it up and Bokan raised his sword to parry the creature’s strike before kicking him off the walls. He became tired and could feel it in his sword arm. ‘No, I shouldn’t think of that’, he thought to himself. He killed another skeleton and prepared for the next one to come when suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his back. Everything went darker, and he sank to his knees. He could see a skeleton coming over the ramparts and tried to block the raised axe, but he couldn’t find the strength to do so. He saw the skeleton bring down his axe to his head and then he fell, never to rise again.

Within minutes after the gates had fallen every mortal had been killed and Karl ordered his necromancers to raise those who had fallen. He would use this castle as an outpost to his own fortress, so that he would be allerted if he would be under attack. First he made sure there truly were no more chaos warriors inside the castle and then he ordered Gunther to occupy this place and make it ready for any defence. The gate would have to be rebuild and then Karl would probably reinforce it with some magical protection.

so, what do you guys think of it? I'd like to hear some suggestions that you might have to make it better.

p.s. next piece of fluff will include Karl's reaction to king amenhotep's decision to include the thunderlord in the covenant :D

I liked it, but would the oil have much effect on the undead?

Looks like I have to write a story with a battle/seige too now.

Good story, but I liked it more from the marauders point of view rather than Karl´s.
