Naming Armies

How do you guys get the inspiration for your army names?

Currently I've only named one army (my ogre's are known as "the blue pants tribe"), but I was curious how do you guys get the names for your armies? I've been thinking about it for a while but can't really come up with anything.

Also if anyone could help me name my space marine chapter that would be greatly appreciated. I'll be starting an army diary for them along with my chaos armies when they get named.

Anyways here's the color scheme for my space marines:

I was almost thinking something deserty but I'm not sure, the colors are rotting flesh and commando khaki. Any suggestions are welcome.

As for the chaos army I'm probably going to look into the army book a bit more and see if I can decide something from that.

My Warhammer Chaos force does not really have a name. They where called the Servants of the Black Star ones, but I removed that name when I started to really develop the leaders history (Lightbringer that is). So now they are just Lightbringers army...

For my 40k Chaos army, which is tiny to say the least, I have the name "The Silent Legion". Not sure why, it sounderd cool mostly :P
Their background is influenced by the Nightlords alot.

Much the same as lightbringer I intend to name my chaos WHF army after the main character ( and probably each unit along the same lines.)

For your marine army think of vicious desert critters to name them after something like a hawk, snake or a scorpion. Sons of the Sands as a nick name?

I actually like sons of the sand. I almost think I'll use that. Maybe write up a bit of fluff about how they like to hide and then counter attack (their special skills give them infiltrate and counter attack & true grit) so pretty much there arn't going to be many vehicles in the army seeing as you can't really hide well in the desert with big vehicles. I could also say something like they were born of aurora marines (parent chapter) which is why they have the light tinge of green to honor their founding fathers.

The more I think about "Sons of the Sand" that the more I want to use it!

well my mate calls his ogres the death maw. his name is johnno, so his general is

da great jonnafon

my high elves are called the marathon men, simply because in my first ever game, i didnt lose a single model. terror testsall over, units fleeing through units causing panic, everything on the table ran away.

I guess I just start spitting out potential names until I hear one that makes me stop and say it again because I liked it (IE: the broken horn tribe). Sons of the Sand is really good.

I base my chaos army on a mongol theme, so I'll naturally select names from that culture. My army is a tribe known as "the merkits", but previously I thought about The Tay'chids and the Kaschlaks, both variations of tribes that actually existed.

I do the same with names, mixing them up. For example, my general is called Temodai, which just is a joined effort of Temujin (genghis khan) and Ogodai (mongol general)

Works for Games workshop, they have done the same when naming the marauder tribes in the chaos book, and I think it works really well for me too :)
