The Chaos Warrior Box; I need suggestions on varying them

I was... suprisingly distraught and displeased after I opened the box. I think this may be the poorest boxed unit I have ever purchased. They're static, almost completely identical, and the way they're put together almost completely precludes significant positional variance without a ridiculous amount of cutting and green stuff.

Heck, it doesn't even come with Halberds or Great Weapons. You have to do conversions to model a basic equiptment choice. That's ridiculous!

So after all that bitching, I need some help. Anyone have any suggestions, ideas, or examples on how you've varied your ranks?

Simple conversions such as tentacles always are a favorite, and also including bits from their patrons daemonic counterpart can be nice, though that really only works well for Slaanesh and Khorne.

I made a rope hanging where the skulls should be on one dude, except it was a freshly chopped off orc head hangin' from it. I'm going Nurgley so I threw a zombie head on one of the champions. File off the shield emblems and make a symbol of their patron diety, or just something else snazy? If you're up for spending even more money you can buy the heads/halberds/gws from Gee Dub.

I like the warriors box set! I also used a halberd from the knight's kit, chopped it in the center and gave it to my champion so his halberd is cooler then the rest's.

Well that's an old plastic box, that's why it's not as rich in body variant, poses and bits like the new ones.

What I did with my warriors was to cut their lower body and then I cut the upper body of the new marauder horsemen (you can also use the knights chests) and glued them together.

Another great way to add variety to yor warrior unit is to add some other chaos models and bits like beastmen, daemons(blood letters for a Khorne unit, plaguebearer for a nurgle unit, etc.) and even an ogre as a unit filler.

Hope you find this useful.

Both knight and marauder horsemen bits should work great together with the warriors.

I converted my Chosen unit a bit to look different. What I'm planning on doing for my next conversion (some Khorne warriors) is to get rid of the shoulder pads and the hand "sockets" altogether and glue on Marauder arms wielding Hellblades from the plastic blood letters.

I like the set and appearance overall but as mentioned it's old so not as multifaceted as newer kits. My main gripe is how to do halberds...

Head swapping is avery easy and effective way to get unique looking models. Heads from the Chaos Knights and Marauder Horsemen are best. The same can go for weapon swapping, using axes, swords etc... from the same boxes as well as Marauders on foot and the Beastmen range.

So I picked up a Beastmen box, decided to try some Sorcerors based on them anyhow, and chopped a pair of legs in half so we'll see how that goes.

I started on a halberd, took one of the axes cut the head off drilled through the attached handle and stuck some .36 wire in there, reattached the axehead (went on slightly crooked because of a poor drill by me), and then put some 'pointy' ends on it.

I'll start a proper army blog in a bit, at the moment I'm struggling with a good scheme.

Yea...they are quite static, but I still like the looks of them and they rank up incredibly well. For halbreds you can use the chaos knight lances with a very small amount of cutting and they'll look way cool. For great weapons you can make those or buy the ridiculously priced metal arms and weapons (I think they still make them). Pretty much all of the lines of chaos work well together. I made them into Bestigors a number of times before the beastmen got the new plastic bestigors.

There are a few options for conversions.

I like using legs from the 5th/early 6th plastic models with the current knight bodies/heads/arms.

I've seen other good conversions also using the knight bodies. I think they used some 40k Tz marine legs, giving a cool robed look (or perhaps it was flagellent legs?).

GW also have a few alternative models you can use; if you have plenty of money you can use hero models for your warriors, alternatively you can draw from the bloodbowl and mordheim lines (chaos team and pit fighter warband especially).

Sticking with the kit (and bitz) you can use the additional hand weapon arms, but then remove the weapon on the left hand, replacing it with a shield. Doing this should make the unit look a bit more varied as the different grip/shields will break up the models' silouhettes a bit.
