Questions about starting a small army; too vague for the army list forums

Some friends and I are all taking the plunge now that 8th edition is here, and I was hoping I could get some general advice. I'm not posting in the army list forums yet, because I'm still really vague on my ideas. We're aiming at 1000pt lists for the foreseeable future, and I will admit that my primary army will be (boo, hiss) dwarves. But! I have a bunch of Chaos guys left from when I was going to field a Cult of Slaanesh list several years ago. That list never got built because I moved away from that group before I ever got to play, but I see an opportunity to resurrect them now!

Right now I'm thinking of making a Marauder-heavy army, with one unit of Chaos Warriors as a centerpiece, and with a Hero on a Steed of Slaanesh for my general. I've got a bunch of Marauders and several of the Warriors left over, as well as the Hero mentioned, but I'd be willing to buy a few new units/boxes if there were any good suggestions. I'm thinking of maybe grabbing two boxes of the new (to me, at least!) Marauder horsemen, and I have a box of Warhounds I was going to use for a 40k project that I could use here if they would be useful.

So, having set that all up: a few questions!

1) How should I arm my Marauders? I'm thinking either two hand weapons or flails, since I'll be fielding that one unit of Warriors with HW/Shields as my anvil. But for all I know, HW/Shield is the only way to run Marauders! Halp!

1a) Is light armor worth it for Marauders?

2) How many units of Marauders, and what size units? As in, would I be better off with two units of 20, or something like

3) Should I run a sorcerer? I have a spare 'generic' one, but he's not mounted. Would he be any use?

4) Now that I look in the bitz pile, I actually have more Warriors than I thought - would I be better off fielding more of them, and scaling back the Marauders?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! If you folks inspire me, maybe this will become my primary army and the Dwarfs will be the backup....

1. You can find a discussion on LA here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/cotec/index.php?showtopic=6671

2. Since today's close combats are slugfests lasting several turns, GWs are better than flails. When it comes to numbers, you'll probably want max rank bonus and some more to ensure your troops will be stubborn if them lose combat. With that in mind, 30+ seems like the way to go.

3. You can't really go wrong with a sorcerer. You could probably gear him for combat, give him Lore of Death and send him with your warriors for now. At 1000 pts he won't be in any real danger. There's a discussion on this here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/cotec/index.php?showtopic=6685

Thanks, I'll check both those threads! It's a shame about the flails, as I think they look cool, but you make a good point about needing the staying power of the GWs. At 30 Marauders per unit though - that's a lot of plastic! I've got enough for one unit no problem, but I think based on this I'll change my initial plan and go with the suggested big Marauder unit and 2 or more units of Warriors.

Mind if I throw another question? At 1000, what would be a good size for those warrior units? I'm thinking of two units of 15; is that too small? Would I be better off with one, bigger unit?

Thanks again!

Great weapons are pretty easy to make. Just cut away the chains and attach the spiky balls directly to the handles and you'll have huge maces. I also used left-over axeheads and swords from the warrior kit to make some pretty menacing-looking great weapons.

15 (5x3) guys in a unit or warriors is a good size. For larger games you'll want to increase to 18 (6x3) guys per unit. I'm usually running a unit of 18 warriors with halberds, Mark of Nurgle and Banner of Rage. With a minimum of three Ws5 S5 attacks each, there is very little that can stand against them in close combat and MoN means that most opponents need 5+ to hit. Am I correct to assume you intend to mark your entire army with Mark of Slaanesh?

PS. Thanks for the comment. I'm fond of chemistry so element 116 sounded like a good nick... although I misspelled it... =/

Just a word of warning, the model that used to be called Steed of Slaanesh (the boobsnake) is not any more. Now it's just a fancy model for a daemonic mount. A steed is now a anteater-chicken on a cavalry base, like the new daemon plastics.

Unuhexium - thanks for the pointers! That does sound like an easy conversion to turn my Marauder flail bits into GWs, I'm going to go with that. As for the Warrior halberds, I don't recall my boxes coming with them (but it's been forever, so I might be misremembering). Was that a conversion too?

And while Slaanesh is my favorite, Nurgle runs a close second (and frankly I think I could paint that up easier); I know his Mark is more expensive, but will I really see the benefits from the Mark of Slaanesh at these low levels? The thought of being nearly unhittable is very, very tempting....

mrtn - thanks for pointing that out. If I stick with Slaanesh, I think for the time being the people I play with would be happy with me calling the boobworm either a Steed of Slaanesh or a Daemonic Mount, as long as I was consistent. I appreciate the pointer though, as I sure didn't realize it until you said that.

I'm going to think on this stuff a bit more, but I think I'll post two list variants - one Slaanesh, one Nurgle - later this afternoon and get some feedback. Thanks for the kind welcome and the good advice!

you can buy a pack of halberd bitz made specifically for Warriors, direct from GW. Same for great weapons but they dot work on Marauders, just Warriors

+1 for what Dracos said. The halberds that GW sell for warriors look great.

There re other ways of making your own halberds. For example using lances from the knight kit, but that's an insane amount of knights just to fill a unit of warriors. Another common method is using banner poles and other thick shafts and fitting axe heads on top of them. It doesn't look bad, but it looks a bit... bland.

Ahh, I found the halberd bitz you folks were talking about. They do look great, I'll have to field at least one unit of Warriors with them just for the looks!

I got bogged down doing a lot of pointless errands last night, but I will try and get an army list up by late tonight for some real in-depth feedback. Thanks again everyone!

It took me forever, but my two possible army lists are posted in the list forum now. Here's the link; please head over there and give me some feedback/advice!

And thanks again for all the pointers in this thread!

EDIT: forgot to put the link!
