Has many people used them in 8th Edition and do they work?

At the moment I have 2 units of chaos knights and was thinking of dropping one unit for a Shaggoth or maybe even 6 trolls

I wanted something to support the knights (or even the warriors units) that had a bit pf punch

Shaggoth has 5 str 6 attacks plus thunderstomp

chaos trolls have 3 str 5 each but also the vomit, which would really help vs knights

No I'm sorry man, the Shaggoth is obsolete.
Buy yourself 6 trolls or preferably a Hellcannon.

You get one hellcannon and two units of warhounds for the same amount of points and are insanley more effective.

I like trolls, a lot. However, they require serious babysitting to get them to do what you want. Unless you use throgg, then they are beyond awesome.

Trolls are a great infantry support unit but I feel like trying to run with knights would be tough. They are slower, and if you are on a flank you probably aren't around the BSB/general so they will just wander off stupid. Unless you mount character to ride with them...?

Shaggoths aren't all that useful. I've tried them a couple of times and was completely unimpressed.

I'm not sure why you want a unit to support knights. The way I see it, Knights ARE the support unit. Small, fast and hit like a train.

But Trolls > shaggoth for sure

Edit: If you don't already have a hellcannon, it's worth looking into as nas has mentioned

A shaggoth is not the best choice in the book however it does still have a role within the army, If I use one I slap a great weapon on it and use it hunt down characters, small units of knights. Its also the perfect thing for dealing arch lecters on war alters with VHS. It has very good stats and its still I4! (so additional hand weapon is a very viable option).

You can`t bring 3 dogs as a unit. The minimum unit size on dogs is 5.

No need to be snarky. Be glad that he wanted to help even if you screwed up.

I used the Shaggoth for the first time this weekend with additional handweapons. Needless to say, it died in the second turn without doing anything (got run down by a Varghulf that was danced into its flank :(). I'll try him again next game, but generally this thing is much too expensive for what you get.

Shaggoths are not a easy thing to use and it really depends on the list you are playing against (they should be T6) but I think if you can take advantage of buildings (to block cannons) and get it stuck in quickly as a support unit for something like knights/marauder horsemen you are going to be very happy with the results. I think the main advantage of a shaggoth is the amount of attacks you can aim at a single point, with only a 50mm base and 7" move it really is the prefect wizard hunter (and its pretty damn nasty against a pope on his wagon!).

Its not the most optimal choice by far but it certainly has uses.

I ran Kholek and 2 Shaggoths against dark elves the other day. I brought the game to a draw... Kholek got killed in turn 1 by a spell that was based off initiative tests... purple sun i think... either way, that sucked...

Overall the game went okay but I brought the game to a draw from knights and warriors performing VERY well in close combat. Was an interesting game to say the least....

I...must be the lucky one, i guess?

I've ran a shaggoth in the last 5? + games. He's done a fantastic job of soaking up wounds and smashing apart everything from a line of warmachines, to a hydra, and all units inbetween.

As with everything in 8th, using him on his own is going to get him killed. I usually pair him up with khorne warriors (6x2, AHW) or with my knights (tzeen, 6x1).

He died once with no returns, to a DE assassin hunting him down relentlessly...but since everything else reached the combat lines that's an acceptable loss in my mind!

In game, he caught 3 cannonballs and a grapeshot. He then proceeded to destory said cannon, and slam into front of a runesmith+GW+quarreler bodyguard and minced them!

Don't leave home without him.

Pilch :D
