shooting at a character in a unit; ...different troop types

If a character joins a unit of a different type (for example an Exalted Champion on a horse joining a unit of marauders), there is a chance that he might be hit by a shooting attack. However, the way I interpret the rule book, the owning player decides who is hit, but must allocate a wound on each model before allocating a second hit on any model. (page 99)

So if said character joined a unit of 50 models, would the only way he could be hit (by a regular shooting attack using BS) is if the unit took 51 hits? (because you could allocate hits on each of the rank and file models before being force to allocate the wound on the character)

I would assume that template attacks could still hit him though because he would not benefit from a LOS roll.

Am I correct on this?

I think so, but not if the unit numbers 5 or less?

Also, they can opt to target the exalted champion instead of the marauders.

Against normal BS shooting, assuming the unit has at least 5 models apart from the character and the champion, the controlling player allocates hits. This happens regardless of the troop types in question.

Against other types of shooting, such as cannons or stone throwers, models are hit directly. Characters can be hit by this, but get a Look Out Sir roll if the unit has at least 5 models aside from the character and champion and is of the same troop type.
