Hello, denizens of CotEC. Recently I have been playing around with different ideas for armies, based on the Storm of Magic books. I saw the story behind the Darkest hour, and I wanted to do an army that was different from the norm. In the Darkest Hour, there is a Skaven Necromancer leading undead skaven into Athel Loren, and it just struck me as a really cool army. Well, I don't much like Skaven, let alone Necromancers, so I decided that just copying that would be both lame and annoying. So I decided on making something Chaosy. The idea came to me by looking at the Mordheim range on Games Workshop. I really liked the look of the Cultists in the Possessed warband, and thought that would be a great start. I began thinking of what kinds of armies I could use to represent this army, but nothing came close. WoC was too focused on Warriors, while Deamons was right out of the question. Beastmen didn't have the human element I needed, so I decided to start mixing and matching different pieces of armybooks together. At first I thought Empire, by the look of their Militia squads and their Archers, thinking them a great combonatination for untrained lunatics, along with Flagellants. But recently I got a version of the Bretonnian armybook online (Yes, a downloaded version, but I make it a point to buy the armybook before making the army.), and thought about using Men-at-arms and peasent bowmen alongsided Chaos Knights. So I ask you, which would better represent a chaos cultist force? I don't make armies just to crush my opponents, it's the backround and the story which drives my armies. I'm just looking for a better way to represent a chaos force rules and stats-wise. |

Played around with idea of subverted Questing Knights for Khornate Chaos Knights, but a Chaos army using Bret core rules would also be an interesting affair given the fun you can have with "counts as" for stuff like Pegasus Knights. |

I'd stick with WoC for this rules-wise. Use lots of Marauders for your Core, backed up by Chaos Spawn, Warshrines and possibly some Trolls. Lots of mutating goodness everywhere thanks to the Warshrines and Marks. Festus can handily represent a unit heavily corrupted by Nurgle. |

I think that a WoC army with Marauders made from both the Chaos Marauder and the Empire Flagellant kits would fit the bill here. |

Totally agree with this. Plus it gives you marks, the Chaos magic, among other things. It'd also be very easy for people to understand and follow. I'd also look at the Militia models in addition or alternately too the Flagellants. Flagellants are better probably, though the variety of bits would be cool. I'd look at mixing Militia + Beastmen and others Marauders + Flagellants. It'd create a very dynamic army with A LOT of variety. Edit: Otherwise I'd look to Empire, using lots of Warrior Priests and some mages. WoC would still be better though. |

Swissdictator, I relly like the idea of mixing beastmen, Flagellants, Marauders and Militia bitz around, it would provide a neat look to the army. Are there any other modelling thoughts on this? I'm starting to get closer to being able to start this army, and I want to know what people think a Cult army should look like. |

The mordheim Possessed warband makes very good, but pricy, cultists. |

Well, yes, but I think that instead of buying thousands of those sets, I'll get one or two of those sets and try and make my own cultists. I just don't have the money to build an army like that. |

Indeed. i'm using them to give my ungor units a bit of flavour, but I'd never make a whole unit of just those models... Would cost a fortune. |

I was thinking of using a mix of Empire Militia, Flagellants, Bretonnian Men-At-Arms, Beastmen, Chaos Marauder and GS to make the cultists. Obviously the Marauder and Beastmen bits would be for the more veteran units, while the standard cultist will either look like militia or Men-At-Arms with hoods wiht one or two mutations sprinkled on for fun. |

Empire, with lots of Flagellants and Militia. And by lots, I mean LOTS. But, to be fair, any of them will do very well. |
