Zurial, the Lord of Ulgu
The Great Changer of Ways looked down upon his lowly servant. He showed me not sympathy, but interest. And so he reached out to my corpse, and wrapped it in the shroud of Ulgu. Shadow consumed my body and darkness consumed my soul. I am reborn, so that I might bring this shadow to every corner of the Old World. Beware, weaklings of the south and cowards in the mountains. For every light casts a shadow. A darkness is coming for you the likes of which has never been seen, and it will fade the world to grey. I am Zurial, Lord of Ulgu.
Zurial Howell started his life out in the great city of Altdorf, as an apprentice at the Grey Order. He had a passion for the tricks and misdirection employed by the practitioners of grey magic, and took to them quickly. While the strife of the city and the Empire burned around him, he devoted himself to his studies. In the twilight of his days, he was a candidate for head of the college to which he had devoted his entire life. However, when he was passed over for someone twenty years younger, he flew into a rage, and attempted to take the title by force. Great was his powers and knowledge, having enchanted his own sword with the very essence of shadow, and a fine suit of light but durable armor. However great his knowledge was, though, his hubris was greater, and it would be his downfall. His revolt failed, and he barely escaped the city with his life. Driven from the home he had known all his many years, he sought the only refuge he could think of…the dreaded north. Deep into the harsh climate he marched, driving his aged and tired body to the very brink of its limits. At last, he could go no further, and came to a cliff higher than any other within sight. Amidst the raging storm, he cried out in anguish at the injustice he had been served, and begged any of the gods to look down on him and make it right again.
His cries were heard, and before his very eyes, his body was reduced to the state he was in at his prime. His armor was reformed, stronger than ever before, and a great army of the Changer of Ways was put under his control. South he marched, but it was not to victory, for his hubris had only grown, and his arrogance was beyond measure. His army came across a dwarven force in a valley not far from the Empire, and he quickly gave the order to charge. In the morning haze, however, the fog was thick and his army tired. His units quickly became confused in the mist as dwarven artillery opened fire, tearing through their ranks like wet parchment. Zurial and the mad cultists following him blindly marched forward, and were easily overtaken by a contingent of Ironbreakers. Led by a Runelord whose name was young in those days, Zurial was killed before he could even realize a fraction of his dream. But such are the schemes of the mysterious Tzeentch. As Zurial’s soul was his to claim, he chose to use his new puppet to another end. Zurial was reborn, his body reknit by the shadow he wielded, and his soul consumed by the darkest thoughts imaginable. His enchanted blade of shadow was reforged, and his armor infused with the essence of Ulgu. Upon awaking, Zurial was called back to the north, where he was led to an artifact that would fracture his mind further, but make him one with the spectrum of the either winds he had devoted his life to.
Tzeentch bestowed upon him an ancient tome, its pages formed from mist and bound in shadow. The chosen child of shadow had been reborn, and for two centuries he has delved into the greatest secrets Ulgu had to offer. The Grey Tome Ulgu broadened Zurial’s mind, and now he is more deadly than ever before.

Ok, so this is my second custom character. This one isn't nearly as in depth as the last one I made (as you can probably tell from the fluff :-P ). I'm making him because a few friends and I are probably going to be starting a campaign soon, and we are trying to create custom heroes for it. So this is the second of the two I want to try to use. I really just wanted a Sorcerer as a general, and I love the Lore of Shadow. So, here it goes. Let me know what you think.

Zurial-450
M WS BS S T W I A LD
4 5 3 4 4 3 5 3 9

Special Rules:
The Will of Chaos
Eye of the Gods

Magic: Zurial is a Level 4 Wizard that uses the Lore of Shadow

Special Rules:

Child of Shadow: Zurial has a deep connection to the Wind of Ulgu, thanks to his lifetime devotion and his study of the Grey Tome. As a result, a thick haze of mist and shadow constantly surrounds him. As a result, all enemies attacking him are at -1 WS and -1 BS.
Also, Zurial is able to conjure up a thick defensive wall of shadowstuff to ward off harm. However, the invocation is taxing. Once per game, Zurial may discount his first unsaved wound suffered with on a roll of 2+.

Equipment:

The Shadowblade: The blade of this sword is composed of pure shadow. It is immaterial and penetrates armor as if it was never there. The enchantments laid into it make it extremely light. The Shadowblade bestows +2 attacks to Zurial, and ignores armor saves

Armor of Mist: This armor is jet black, and reflects no light from its surface. The grooves of the armor pulse with an unnatural violet light. The Armor of Mist bestows a 2+ Armor Save that cannot be improved by any means, and also bestows a 4+ ward save.

Grey Tome of Ulgu: Within this tome are secrets that were recorded in a time long since passed. The secrets within every shadow are revealed to those who would brave its pages. This item bestows the Loremaster (Lore of Shadow) upon Zurial.
Also, it grants him access to the Shadow Invocation attack. During the Shooting Phase, Zurial may choose an unengaged unit within his line of sight. If they are within 12”, that unit takes 2d6 Str 1 hits (no armor saves allows) as Zurial unleashes a flurry of darts composed of shadow.

He is too strong

He has 5 attacks ignoring armour

a 2+/4++ save and the charmed shield on top of that

Mark of nurgle

Blood curdling roar

I would go with:

Chaos armour

Cloak of Uglu: Etheral ,4+ ward and scout

Book of mists: Loremaster (shadows)

Shadowblade: enemy models must reroll succesful saves in close combat

True, he does have all that. He costs more than putting all that on would cost, though.

But I figured he would be too much, so what about this: Remove the +2 attacks from the sword, and remove the special armor save from the armor, so that it is just standard chaos armor of 4+.

I didn't even think about the ethereal rule. I will consider that. And is 5 attacks ignoring armor really that great? Any character can ignore armor for 50 points (sometimes less than that).

Zurial loses this ability if he is wounded by a flaming attack or a spell from the lore of light.

That sounds like a fun character, but it isn't quite what I'm going for with this one. Thanks for the idea, though.

What are you going for?

The background says vengful mage

the rules says scary combat monsyer/caster.

What are the barebone and I will help

And since you don;t want the wraith-damned charcter I will fully design him as a character.

The new wraiths look nice to convert

I'm looking for a cross between a caster and a combat character. I may have gone a little heavy on the combat part. I just got done making a custom exalted, so probably where that came from. Basically, I want him to be able to hold his own in combat, not necessarily dominate. Chose Lore of Shadow to help with that, and because I really like that lore, both flavor wise and mechanic wise. I suppose if he is passable in combat, the hexes should help make him seem more frightening. I guess with the removal of the +2 attacks, and extra armor save, I could be happy with him, just think I will have to drop the cost then. That doesn't seem worth 450 points.

Ok, so after looking him over, and reading your suggestions, I've realized that this was a flawed model for a caster. So let's go back to scratch. The main combat thing I want to keep is the Aethersword effect, as it's really a flavor thing to have the sword made of shadows, so I figured that armor wouldn't help much against it. If you have a better idea for a blade composed of shadows, by all means let me hear it. I'm open to suggestions. As for the rest, what about this?

Zurial-450
M WS BS S T W I A LD
4 5 3 4 4 3 5 3 9

Special Rules:
The Will of Chaos
Eye of the Gods

Magic: Zurial is a Level 4 Wizard that uses the Lore of Shadow

Special Rules:

Child of Shadow: Thanks to his rebirth and his innate knowledge of the Wind of Ulgu, Zurial has learned to blend his own reality with the aspect of his obsession. His body has taken on a quality like that of shadow. Zurial has the Ethereal rule.

Equipment:

The Shadowblade: The blade of this sword is composed of pure shadow. It is immaterial and penetrates armor as if it was never there. The Shadowblade ignores armor saves

Armor of Mist: Chaos Armor: This armor is jet black, and reflects no light from its surface. The grooves of the armor pulse with an unnatural violet light. The Armor of Mist bestows 4+ ward save.

Grey Tome of Ulgu: Within this tome are secrets that were recorded in a time long since passed. The secrets within every shadow are revealed to those who would brave its pages. This item bestows the Loremaster (Lore of Shadow) upon Zurial.

So that's what I have so far. I'm looking to give him one more ability. I'm thinking something along the lines of a bonus to channeling, some sort of dispel scroll effect (possibly causing a caster to forget a spell on a roll of 4+. Flavored as shadows clouding the mind), or maybe an illusion based effect that acts like a reinforcement rule, similar to Wulfrik's Seafang rule. Either something to make him better at just being a wizard, or something to help the army. Any thoughts? Look for his price to between 400-450
