Ok, so I'm starting a new army diary soon (actually my first...) and I'm just about ready to start the thread and everything, but I need some advice on one thing real quick before I start it. I just finished painting a unit today, and I'm looking for a way to do their bases as kinda like a winter wasteland look, which is how I envision the Chaos Wastes being. I've done winter bases before, using modeling sand and GW Snow flock, but I'm not sure the sand really looks right for that rocky wasteland style of base I am looking for. So, I'm looking for ideas on how to make a base look like some sort of rocky, barren wasteland. Primary color of it I'm thinking grey (which can be painted on, I know. Just trying to paint a mental picture :-p ) Also, Is GW Snow flock that best to use for something like that, or would you suggest a different product/style? |

I painted some bases which I think suit this theme. Tutorial/breakdown can be found here: http://www.lostingaming.net/2010/12/drop-base.html |

Those look awesome, but I'm not sure I want them to be that in depth. That style will work great for characters, but I think I want something a bit quicker for the rank and file units. Thanks for the idea, though. |

If you want the effect of snow droves, I would advice using poly urethane glue. When you pour it it will be clear, but as it dries it will swell up into a white hard and slightly elastic foam. If you sprinkle liberal amounts of snow flock on the base straight after applying the glue it will look great. Apply it with a tooth pick and you can push it around a bit and decide where you want the tops of the droves. A friendly word of caution: the glue is very sticky if you get it on your hands (or clothes) and can not be removed with water. |

OK, so I found some tips and materials to use for the look I am aiming for, now I just have another question. When doing winter bases, especially ones made to look like they are in a very rocky area, what color do you use on the rim? I used Graveyard Earth before, and have been happy with it, but that seems more standard winter landscape as opposed to rocky/wasteland winter landscape. Any ideas? |

What about a light grey or blue? I've seen that work quite well. |

Chardon Granite? I think the dark grey and bright snow can look quite striking. |

I didn't think about the Chardon Granite...that could work well. Thanks for the idea! Now just have to wait for my snow flock from Woodland Scenics to get here... |

I based every army Ive owned until my chaos warriors on snow bases- theyre a snap to do! To get a good wasteland look, I basecoated black, then dry brushed charadon granite, codex grey, and very lightly with fortress grey before adding liberal amounts of GW snow (baking soda works well too). I find that painting the edges black keeps the overall appearance dark and forboding, and really keeps the subtle highkights and the snow effect as the center of attention for the base, giving off a great "were from the north, where nothing survives, and were here to kill and enslave you" feel. Cheers, Nick |

I'll probably paint the rim of my wintery bases Adeptus Battlegrey, one of my favourite GW paints...under the snow the bases are very rocky, so that should work well I think. :) Theo |

Khornedog, that sounds like a good scheme. I'm assuming you are basecoating and painting some sort of sand or talc, or did you just put the snow right on that base and skip the sand/rock? |

Yup, I always glue sand down before I spray the models black, it gives a much nicer texture than the slight roughness of the GW base alone. |

I agree. Was just checking. Do you use the modeling sand from GW, or another brand? I have always found the sand from GW works fine, but I'm getting really picky with this new army I'm painting, so I'm looking into alternatives and keeping an open mind. |

I don't know how most people are, but I have a few containers of different sands. One is a super fine white sand (coral and shell), another is a medium grained "sand pit" sand (rock/stone), and the third is GWs sand which is quite coarse. I've used them by themselves and mixed them to get different textures. I'd suggest maybe hitting a beach somewhere and getting a container full of sand just to compare textures to the GW stuff. Also, you could try model railroad train ballast. I have a couple containers of Woodland Scenics ballast and they make that in different sizes as well. This may just be me, but, I like the idea of a medium to fine sand w/ some tiny pebbles in it for basing. You can't really go wrong as the finer sand makes for a great texture and a couple pebbles here and there are usually perfect for looking like rocks. Add whatever on top of that and you're pretty much set. If you're looking to put a boulder or something like that on, you can even get some larger pebbles to place on random bases where space allows. |

That's really the look I'm going for in a "dirt with rocks in it" look. I just don't quite achieve that with GW base sand. I have an order coming from Woodland Scenics containing snow flock and something else, though the name of it eludes me at this moment. I will have to look into ballast as well. |
