Here is a pic of an orc I painted. I used the Woodland Scenics medium ballast on the base. This may be a good size to mix in w/ a fine sand. You could probably even go w/ large ballast and use a little less of it in a sand/ballast mix. Posted Image |

I never was a fan of medium or large ballast, itd be the equivalent of walking through fist or head sized rock everywhere you go and is just not realistic imho. Fine sand gives a better feel yo a model, and makes it a little nicer overall, again, imo. Obviously do what you think looks best :) Cheers, Nick |

I agree. I was saying to use medium or large ballast mixed w/ fine sand. Obviously you're going to have to mix to suit your tastes. You could even just glue a few pieces of fine or large ballast down by themselves to simulate the larger rocks. |

I would def. keep the rims black no matter what. anything else would draw attention away from the basework. I have seen winter bases with light blue sides and all I could think about was the light blue sides! Also if kept black,it would look better in the movement tray. Or just stay on the dark side of the pallette! |

I dig up some sand and siv out all the natury bits. Then I let it dry, and there we have basing material! I mix it with some small aquarium stones, and that's what I use for bases. Theo |
