I have never been a huge fan of the full on spiky and horrific version of chaos, more favouring the concept of barbarian tribesmen who worship the chaos gods as elemental forces and who occasionally grow additional body parts. Based on that I am planning a new army based on a more historical version of the northmen. Perhaps even fluffing it out to make villagers - suggesting that life goes on for them beyond the annual incursions and iviking. To that end I am looking for different minis that are less epic and ott so that i can convert them up a bit. So first question. Does anyone have any idea about TGN miniatures the hammer of the Gods range and initially something like the 28mm Viking huscarls. They look like nicely cast multi part plastics but does anyone know if they are out of proportion with the rest of the game. I'm worried they might be a little on the small side as WH always seems to revel in using bespoke scales. |

I have been a lurker here for a while, but I had to join to tell you it is not a good idea to buy the huscarls. Bought 32 of them and found that they are indeed 28mm, but that the models produced by GW are significantly bulked and the huscarls next to pretty much anything looks really odd. I went to the trouble of converting a few with weapons too and the result was a look of over-sized weapons. I can post a couple of pics if you would like confirmation (maybe next to wulfrik, as it looks hilariously disproportionate). I've had to bite the bullet myself and go with the GW marauders, chopped em up a bit; and made them look a little less like they belong in a German disco. A good look I've seen on this site is warriors heads minus horns, also works to take the horns / pony tail / ear rings / necklaces / bondage gear off the marauders. A little lengthy for a first post... |

Ach, thought it might be the case. The shame of the thing is that if you want to do straight Norse you are really out of luck with GW stuff. I had to laugh at your 'German Disco' concept - never thought of it that way but I suppose you have a good point really! I just see the GW marauders as Cimmerian, nomadic barbarian types in the vein of Conan and that was really not what I want to show. Tbh the chaos warriors themselves aren't quite what I want either. It would be interesting to see your pics if you have time. Thanks for the reply, my search continues. |

Completely agree, they do look like conan clones. I didn't really want Vikings either, but it seemed like a good place to start. The whole men of the north theme doesn't work with blokes striped to loin cloths. Nil desperandum! There is a thread on here with some pretty good alternatives though so not all is lost. However the idea of spending serious cash in the short term was not my preferred route. Anyway here a few photos to show the difference. Posted Image Okay so I may have been a little rash to say it was hilariously disproportionate, though it is almost a head shorter (when you take into account the extra part of on the base) Posted Image Beside a marauder. Posted Image Hehe. |

Actually not as bad as I thought, the difference between Wulfrik isn't too much and I could live with that based on how especially powerful he is supposed to be. It really does illustrate how poorly proportioned the GW minis have become. I know that is what they are going for with the heroic scale but even so... Needs thought I think. Thanks again. |
