Marauder Question; Nurgle Horde... Is it worth while?

I've really liked Great Weapon Marauders, they are really cheap (40 guys with S5 for 200pts is a steal), they can do serious damage in horde formation and stick around nicely if steadfast and near the general / BSB.

I've never gotten much joy out of Tzeentch marauders with shields. The 5+ ward is fine, but at T:3 the marauders give away lots of wounds to try to save. At S3 they also don't do much even if they do stand around not dying. My preference is big blocks with great weapons which die like flies, but stick around thanks to numbers and steadfast. Tzeentch shields would last longer, but I prefer the steady chipping away done by a big handful of S5 attacks round after round.

Nurgle isn't a great mark unfortunately. It helps against BS shooting, but people probably shouldn't be targeting a giant block of cheap infantry with handguns and bows. Shooting with some armor piercing should be going after higher value victims like Knights and Chariots, while low S shooting should be going after units small enough to destroy like warhounds or marauder horsemen. If someone finds themselves shooting at a block of 5pt guys they probably didn't deploy their shooters very well, really you should always have something better to shoot.

It helps in close combat, but only in very specific circumstances. WS:2 opponents go from hitting on 4's to 5's, but who cares? Your marauders aren't likely to be threatened by WS:2 troops regardless of whether or not they're marked. Goblins or Skaven Slaves aren't there to do wounds anyway, their job is to get in the way, be steadfast, or take away your steadfast not kill 40 marauders.

It helps against WS:5 opponents, but no other weapon skills. So what WS:5 opponents is it helping you face? Chaos Warriors will still butcher Marauders by the handful, elite Elves will either re-roll from ASF if high elves or hatred if dark elves. Either way elite elves are getting tons of hits. Not much else is WS:5. If it helped against WS:4 or WS:3 it would be great, there are lots of enemies in that range. Not too much is WS:5 though, and the stuff that is will be able to smack marauders around pretty handily Nurgle or not. You'll get a little help, but 30pts is too much to pay for what you get.

If I were in your position, I'd paint the marauders green, give them boils and whatever other Nurgle fluff conversions you like, but play them as undivided and just make sure to remind your opponent they don't have the mark. Get a bunch of the painted up and hope the mark of Nurgle is a better buy the next time a new armybook comes around.

I agree with all of the above, but I feel that the bonus vs shooting is more valuable than stated. Run these guys wide and use them as a screen for the stuff that will really do the hurting. They will either get owned by something nasty, or can reform into a bus to allow the warriors, monsters, and knights through. Makes me wonder if MSU would work in this case. Of course this could all change in a week or so.
