It looks like most chaos players are including DP as their general. How do you protect a DP from being picked off with shooting , cannons , bolt throwers etc. ? Other than being sniped by shooting it looks like this is the best choice for the army general. |

Giving him a chimera buddy to screen him will help with the shooting. Yes, he is the strongest option of the lord choices (see the dozen other threads on the subject). |

Hortennse Lord/Sorcerer is also a very powerful option. It really depends on who you are facing. If you're up against a heavy artillery army then I think Hortennse is actual a superior choice to the DP. However, the DP is extremely versatile and is not afraid of much other than artillery. Two ranks of trolls make an excellent screen for the DP. Chances of a cannonball getting through are very slim. Charmed shield is also a great selection, especially at only 5pts. Using terrain can protect him as well (either via line of sight, or having a barrier/wall stop a cannonball). Lastly, having super quick warmachine hunters to take out those threats as early as possible. |

Charmed Shield and Dragon Bane Gem take care of a lot of protection from war machines. After that, when facing war machines, you have to play very aggressive. Only give them one turn to get shoot him before he's into combat and can't be targeted. This is why wings are a must on the DP in my opinion. The chimera can work as a nice blocker as well, albeit an expensive one. I like the idea of using a troll unit, but it's a little slower than I would like. 12" isn't bad, but I want to get in someone's grill turn 1 and triple death snipe characters in that turn. I have to get the DP within 12" of enemy characters to do that and the trolls will prevent that kind of a turn 1. I play my DP very aggressive which really puts the pressure on my opponents and most of my battles are fought in my opponent's deployment zone, even against a couple of ogre players in yesterday's tournament. And, people are so worried about the demon that they can hardly think about the two units of skullcrushers bearing down on them or the 5 chariots...did I also mention that chimera coming along for the ride? B) I love the DP. He has weaknesses. But really, I think my only fear is facing the triple cannon empire army. Dwarves can do it too, but they are more likely to be fielding flaming on one or two of those and I don't have to worry about that with the Dragon Bane Gem. |

I've found that Lore of Death is kind of redundant with the DP. He slaughters characters easily enough in the close combat phase(my DP's first target is my opponents lvl 4 caster). Don't get me wrong, I think death magic is useful, but I believe a DP using Lore of Nurgle adds so much more to our combat phase. |

I've tried both and I decided on the opposite. What I found toughest to deal with in my WoC army were the following. 1. Terrorgheists 2. Unkillable Dreadlords 3. Cannons To deal with these, Death is much better. Last tournament I sniped two "unkillable" dreadlords with death snipes. It works on cannons also. And Soulblight on a bubble is amazing, essentially giving their entire army -1S and -1T. Nurgle is a good lore though, so you can't really go wrong with either. |

Lore of Slaanesh and Lore of Shadow are also great choices for the DP. Of course you do have to give up that lovely minus one to hit in close combat. |

I do take a DP of Slaanesh on occasion because I love the Lore of Slaanesh. I think between the two though that the Nurgle one is slightly more competitive (which still makes the DP of Slaanesh amazing). |

I've tried both lore's and I've found Death to be more competitive. Though a DP can run into a combat and take out characters with ease, champions and "throw away" characters in the unit can slow that down with challenges. Lately I've played very aggressive with the DP and get within triple Death snipe range of the model I want to take off the board. And, that model has gone away on turn 1 more often than not. Lore of nurgle can't do that. And, though gaining +1 wounds and toughness is AWESOME, I find my DP with death almost never dies anyway. A triple cannon empire list can take him down. But, then again, what model wouldn't go down to the triple cannon volley? Soulblight is all you need as far as a hex goes to really swing the battle in your favor. The three snipe spells allow you to very quickly take out your opponent's few models that threaten the DP. And, purple sun always comes in handy. And, Doom and Darkness is a GREAT spell for WoC to use because we often lack ranks compared to our opponent. Doom and Darkness gives us a good chance of overcoming steadfast. Death is just flat out a great lore. |
