Just got the new WoC book. Before I go and convert a Nurgle DP, I'm considering basing my 8th WoC army around my Lord on Manticore.

Lord of Chaos - 210
Mark of Tzeentch - 10
Talisman of Preservation - 45
Dragonhelm - 10
Crown of Command - 35
Third Eye of Tzeentch - 10
Scaled Skin - 20
Soul Feeder - 10
Halberd - 8
Manticore - 150
Iron Hard Skin - 25
Venom Tail - 10

543

It is a fairly powerful lord (1+ AS, 3++ WS, immunity to fire(pretty much with 2+ re-rollable WS), Stubborn, chance to regain wounds).
Ws 8 S6 A5
The Manticore brings another
Ws 5 S5 A4+1

The Lord himself is pretty much unkillable, and I figure the manticore brings in abit more, much needed, killing power as well as the ability to fly. But the manticore itself might also be a weakness as it can be killed under my Lords feet, leaving him stranded.

What do you reckon, could a manticore be a good investment for a Hortense Lord, or is it just an unnecessary points sink?

Maybe I'm just better of with a DP, which packs about as much killing power, is fairly durable, can fly and can be a lvl 4 wizard for a similar point investment?

What do you guys think?

I'd say it's not worth it. I'd much rather take the Disc, as it can't be shot out from underneath him. You could easily lose the Manticore the first turn and then be stuck with movement 4 for the rest of the game.

And if you were too fight a dwarf with Anvil of doom, he could take away your fly if you use the Manticore rather than the Disc. and as previously mentioned the manticore would probably die to a cannonball :(

I think the manticore could work well enough, and look awesome while doing it. I vote the manticore for style.

There are many reasons why this is not the best idea
or another mount than disc in general.

1st. Hortense is build not to die.
So don't give him a ride that could die. His job is to be mobile and hold
up the opponents elite units.

Also a waste of points is the deamon mount.
I can't die under him but has same T and W so it's a waste of points.

What i do is give the Lord the disc and the BSB the demoni mount.
Both get the ward 3+, the lord the reroll and the BSB the dragon gem.
A LVL 2 wizzard gets another disc and the dragon helm.

That makes 1 unkillable lord and 2 unkillable by fire heros.

That group can even hold up and kill the 3 nasty HE fire phoenix.
Put a great weapon on all 3 and you don't have to fear anything.

Worked fine for me so far doesn't matter what opponent

For theme, and style, i say Yes!

You dont give the opponent points if just the manticore die, you also have to kill the lord.(?)
Excellent way to draw fire from the rest of the army, because everyone "knows" the manticore is easy to kill.
Gives your opponent less reason to whine about your "unkillable"lords, since you obviously dont go for the best build.

Go for it.

I don't see the point of creating an unkillable lord only to have him stranded with movement 4 when his mount dies. I think the disk is definitely the way to go... and for less points too.
