Van Horstmanns Speculum; How do you deal with it?

Warrior of the Chamber
I run both Warriors of chaos and Empire armies, and both are the most popular choices at my local club.

If I run my Empire against warriors I normally give my general (arch lector) van horstmanns speculum and stick him in with 30 greatswords. I then gleefully declare challenges against any DP that comes close with the expected results. Most people seem to do this.

So, I'm wondering how to deal with it when I come to use my warriors against an empire army, which is likely to be set up the same. My first thought is to make sure my DP never gets into combat with the arch lector unless he has an accompanying character to take the challenge. But the DP will eventually end up in a challenge if the other characters die (let's face it, greatswords stay to the last man so the combat is going to last 2-3 turns).

I'm also thinking Death magic - and just keep targeting the character most likely to have van horstmanns.

Anybody have much experience with this?

Sorcerers on Daemonic Mounts. They have almost the same stats as the Arch Lectors, but with a better armorsave, and the speculum doesn't steal the +1T granted by the mount. Combine with MoN to ruin the priests day.

At least this is how I deal with the speculum. It has worked fine until now.

i second this.

Personally i don't use the DP anymore or actually din't that often.
He is just not made for combat and the GW love goes to other armies.
As long as you are hit by ST 6 weapons it doesn't matter what toughness your have.
And every army these days have a lot of armour ignoring attacks.

So i completely dumped this guy or armour heavy guys in general and
went to ward save. There is at least no way for this bogus.

As an example...
Chaos Lord, Armour of destiny, Disc, Crown of command, Dragon helm,
1 reroll, soul feeder, barding, great sword.

He is holding any opponents elite units doesn't matter how big plus
chops them in pieces.

Beside that i field BSB on disc, talisman, dragon gem, great weapon and can get the same result.

I would love to face your special guys with them

I think it's important to remember that he doesn't get your modified stats, just the stats on your profile. So if you've beaten down any other champions and had lucky Eye of the Gods rolls then you probably will be at least even. I guess a person could try and argue that bonus stats go on a character's profile, but the way it reads I don't think it does.

Outside of that, Death Magic could probably be a safe way to get rid of him at ranged, then you can charge your Daemon Steed Sorcerer into the fray and finish him off if you don't kill him outright.
