Troll's Play Thing

I really want to run a monster/troll/etc themed army and I think Kholek would make a great addition. I plan on running some dragon ogres in the list anyways. That being said, would Kholek, Throgg, a defensive BSB and a mounted lvl 2 wizard be reasonable? I can fit them all into 2500, but they are 1140ish points. I could field a horde of trolls and some hounds for core. 2 chimeras and a unit of 3 dragon ogres for special. No rare. Would this work ok? Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

I do not see the love affair people have with Special Characters, we have a top 5 army book. But in a case like this where your building a theme monster list, I do like it. |

If I could take a generic Shaggoth Lord and/or Troll Hero I would. I prefer not to take special characters either. But I am doing this more for the fun of modeling, painting and the theme than any tactical advantage. |

i would put our armybook somewhere in the lower midfield. I don't see who we clearly beat out to be top 5. HE, DE, Vampires, Lizzards, Orcs/Gobs jump instantly into my mind to be top 5 Not to mention Empire and Skaven Edited by Kurrilino, Jun 1 2013, 05:35 AM.

Orcs and Goblins? Are you sure you don't mean Ogres? Competitively speaking, O&G are nowhere near top 5. I'd say top 5 would probably be (in no particular order) both High and Dark Elves, Lizardmen, Ogres and Skaven, with our current book probably one or two places down from there. That "top tier" from Kurrilino was probably the weirdest one I've ever seen. O&G? Come on, now. HE's status as top tier is grossly overrating them - they have a nice matchup against WoC, but Horde armies take them to the woodshed. And by the way, WoC is without a doubt a top 5 army - it's winning GTs, for crying out loud. I think the new top 5 is Skaven, DE, Lizzies, Ogres, and WoC. Anyway, to drag this all back on topic, Kholek can be nice with Throgg... provided you don't run into anyone running Lore of Death or Shadow. I-test-or-dies wreck that entire army. I agree with Rothgar's top 5. The others are competitive, but those 5 really rock the house. |

You bring a good point with the initiative tests Rothgar. I am used to this as I have been a dwarf player for 15 years! |

I will admit, I'm probably overrating High Elves a bit. I haven't really seen them fight anything but my Warriors so far, and out of 4 games I've only won once. Maybe if I play them with my Ogres or my Empire I can get a better grasp on them. |

Yeah, play them with Ogres and Empire. Both of those armies match up significantly better against them than WoC does. |

Of course, it depends heavily on what the HE player does. There's only one list that I feel gives WoC a significant amount of trouble, and that's an MMU force centered around mobile blocks of White Lions or Swordmasters, some Bolt Throwers to threaten the Daemon Prince, and 2 Frostheart Phoenixes. If he goes for the Horde of White Lions under the Banner of the World Dragon, you can easily jam it in place and rip it apart. |

I don't see the appeal of Dragon Ogres in monster lists. Personally a unit of Nurgle Ogres with GWs fares better considering the amount of attacks, impact hits, and stomps they can churn out. (all imo, obviously) |

Mostly, I just like dragon ogres! I can see the appeal of nurgle ogres and I have plans to make some. How many ogres would you think is needed in a unit? 6, 8? Edited by The Randy Halfling, Jun 5 2013, 02:12 AM.

At least 6, and I would prefer 9. Even Nurgle doesn't remove the need for a rank of "fat" on ASL units. |
