I do not think that this is true.
As amadiss has mentioned; it most certainly is. Check your book if you doubt me.

if you dont want to run the DP then i suggest one of the following for you Sorc Lord

daemonic mount (for toughness 5) and then sit him in unit of knights for Look out sir and body guards.

or if your worried about IF damage to the knights (which i would be!) use...

MEDIUM cav.

Daemonic Mount (T5) in 8 Marauder Horsemen (Light Armour and Shields for 4+) that gives you a fairly armoured and cheap body guard for Look out sir, and also they are more expendable if you want to 6 dice and the inevitable IF table. You do lose fast cav, but then unless you go steed of slaanesh you would lose fast cav as soon as the Sorc joined them on a barded steed or daemonic steed, so you may as well take the extra armour. MoS also means they wont panic from enemy fire.

I run my Lvl 4 Nurg Sorc Lord in a medium cav bunker at the moment for these reasons
Unfortunately the daemonic mount is mister outs cav so you do not get look out sir from knights or horsemen.

Note that Daemonblade, Collar of Khorne and Chaos Familiar are also magic items, and so follow all the normal rules for items of their types (with the exception that they are bought differently in the Warriors of Chaos army list). For example, you can not have a Daemonblade and another magic weapon.
I'm glad they did it this way, because Chaos Familiar would be downright broken if it didn't take up a magic item slot.

Chaos Familiar and Skull of Katam comes to mind immediately for that. Not sure what other broken combos I'd look for if I could use it with other Arcane Items.

High Zar of Khorne

Perhaps not broken, but not having to choose between familiar & dispel scroll is quite nice.

I wouldn't use a daemonprince if I were you, however I'm not sure which way is the best to build him, depends on the rest of the army imo.
