Greetings, generals and spawn. After a long, involuntary hiatus from wargaming, I've recently had the chance to spend way too much money on starting again. I chose Chaos this time around because the models are excellent, but unfortunately I can't say I'm impressed with the character models. Some of them look dated, while others just don't appeal to me visually. There are a few gems, sure, but I'm looking for better ideas. Alternate models? Avatars of War comes to mind, and I've used a couple, but they're awkwardly smaller in scale (in my experience) than the GW plastics theyre standing next to... likewise with Gamezone. Still, got an alternate manufacturer's model you love? Or else, show us conversions... yours, or just ones youre impressed by. If possible, tell us how you did it! Also happy to see sculpts, but purely as inspiration... I'm barely starting my green stuff training. |

Great to have you back! Is there a theme or god you are looking at? AOW have some great stuff for nurgle. I run mono Khorne and my characters are all converted from years and years of collecting models. If you are going for a specific theme i'm sure you will get some great pointers. |

I have found that a simple head swap can really affect the look of the model. I have more of those "Generic Champion of Chaos" models with two axes than I could ever use, but a head swap and a weapon change really affects the final product. Add to that a god specific paint job and "Generic Champion of Chaos" becomes whatever you want him to be. |

^ This I've played about with head swaps and frankly it's the best way to get mileage out of the models. It really does affect the way they look. |

Good advice so far! To be more specific about my own needs, lets me say first that I've converted and adapted a few things already for my own particular case, but the planning stages led me to the idea of this thread. Not so much as a specific question for my own army, but as a way to gather up a lot of ideas in one place for my own reference and people in the future. With that said: If this were the second or third army I owned, I mightve chosen a specific theme, but since it's the first, I want the opportunity to use any combination of units and fluff. So it's Undivided with a very detailed backstory behind most of the characters and units, allied chaos dwarves (Tamurkhan or counts-as, just because I love em) and sort of a custom theme. Consequently, I'm up for seeing anything that looks good... kit bashes, repositionings, etc. I'll post some of my own within a day or two. One thing I've been puzzling over: Any bright ideas for demonic mounts? I'm a big fan of magnetizing and have most of my mounted characters interchangeable, but that can look a little funny... for instance the basic Lord of Daemonic Mount horse seems to be standing still, and the riders from the manticore kit look like they're hurtling along. Anybody have any alternate manufacturer, or custom models they use? Edited by Heroesneverdie, Jul 10 2013, 09:17 AM.

I turned the Archaon model into a battle standard with ... Drumroll... A head swap. I also switched his shield with the standard shield from the chaos knights box. Someday, I'll get a camera and start my own diary. I just can get the iPhone 5 camera to function well for miniature shots. Another very very simple conversion idea for marauders is to cut off the weapon hand and turn it slightly to convey a swinging motion. I first discovered that with my beastmen army years ago. |
