is there a CHEAP way of making movement trays?

Since I'm FLAT BROKE, I'm still trying to find ways to cut corners financially, with that being said. How would you suggest making some cheap magnetic movement trays (all my models are magnetized, they just need some sort of metal base to go on to).

Also, WHERE would I find these things... I can't seem to find anywhere that sells thin metal sheets... Hmmm the conundrums...

Yes, there is a cheap way to do them

Is how I make mine.

As far as magnetizing them, I use adhesive magnetic sheets. It usually comes in 8.5 x 11 inch sheets. Cut to internal dimensions of the tray, peal and stick.

You can also get sheets that are not magnetic themselves but are metallic so magnets will still to it. Looks and works just like the magnetic sheets (blackish brown).

Make sure you get the 1mm or 1.5mm thick sheets. I use the 1mm sheets personally.

I honestly cant remember where I bought mine... I kind of bought a bunch in bulk in 2006, but that was before I got sick... I don't remember much of that year... I'm sure any art supply house or online somewhere.

hmmm I cant get to my stash to see if I still have the packaging or not at the moment. Once I can get to that section of the storage room, I'll post here if I have a name for you.

I've been using a similar method for the trays themselves lately, for magnetization I use stainless steel flashing. It's used for roofing, it's about $1 per foot. And you can cut it with scissors. Rough it up with sand paper before gluing it in. Doesn't raise the minis too high. I go with Raw Earth Magnets (pick them up in lots from eBay, about $4 for 100). The seller I use is from China, so I stock up and get about 1000 at a time. Then I magnetize weapons, shields, etc. Really economical in general really.

One thing to be aware of before cutting your tray base. GW bases are NOT exactly 20mm or 25mm or 25x50mm... I found this out the hard way when I made my first few trays...

Don't assume that you can go off the supposed base size. Lay out your unit and then measure to get the exact dimensions. Even then, you might have to shave down a side of a base or two to get them to fit properly...

Cavalry bases are the worst... They are only 24x49mm usually.. When I made my cav trays, I ended up with extra space... Which my OCD couldn't deal with so I had to make new trays... Of course, this might not bother other people without OCD issues lol

I use the GW modular trays. Get 4 trays worth of corners and then use a small miter box and razor saw to cut the extra sides included to make my own 45 degree corners. Made many extra trays this way.

I use metal sheets liquid nailed to the tray. I get my sheets at work for drywall guys that use the as blocking in the walls. I always use flocking on my bases so the earth magnets work best for me. Larger sizes for metal models.

thanks for all the great tips guys :D I'll be heading to the hardware store to pick up some stainless steel flashing soon and then I think I'll try rocking some foamcore on the outsides to give it some scenic quality :D

I used this on top of GW modular trays, worked fine & wasn't too expensive.

When I want to make them on the cheap I buy pieces of sheet metal for roofing (something like foot squares for a buck or so) and cut them up with tin snips and use a cheap hand seamer (I have this one) to bend the edges, about 1/4" to 90 degrees.

I can go into more detail if you're interested, but the tools are cheap if you don't have them, and the sheets of metal are super cheap and most hardware stores should have them.

I wouldn't use them in a painting competition, but for gaming purposes, they work great.

Super cheap:
Cut a cardboard base of the right size for your unit. Glue the edges of old sprue onto the cardboard to use as edges for your movement tray. Base, basecoat, paint and done!

Edit: Ops, missed that they had to be magnetic.
