Alternate Look for a Mutalith II

I posted a while back seeking advice and ideas for an alternate mutalith vortex beast head, and there was some good discussion about it. In the end, I was left with the idea of taking the spare tentacles from a forgefiend kit I was using as a hellcannon, and trying to formulate a new head from those and some spare parts. The point is to avoid the slimy, wet looking tentacled head, which conflicts with my themes of heat, metal, and machinery. I've blue-tacked together a solution out of spare parts, and I think I like it, but I'm a perfectionist. Sadly, I don't have any 40k these days, bits included, or this'd be a lot easier.

I was hoping to get a few opinions on how this looks or if anything seems off about it before I lay on the glue...

I like it in concept. I do not like the shoulder pad on his face however.

Thanks for being the first to give me some feedback. I have to ask, is that just because you already -know- its a shoulderpad? In reality its nothing but a shaped piece of metal. The idea was that it starts closed, slides back and the tentacles lash out.

I'm not desperately attached to it, just have to ask... it's mostly there to cover the fact that there IS no face underneath, just a hollow neck.

No, its because it looks like its just tacked on over his eyes. There's nothing to suggest that its a door or something like you state. It looks and feels out of place and not integrated part of the model.

I guess what I am say6ing is that it looks like it was just tacked on as an afterthought... It's just there... And to me it stood out as out of place.

It needs something more to tie to into the model to make it look like its an actual thing and not just a random bit tacked on. But how to accomplish that I don't know.

I do a lot of conversion work. I tend to go the more subtle route, simple is better. So take my comments with a grain of salt. I'm not trying to be negative, but constructive so please don't take offence.

None taken whatsoever! This is a pretty unusual conversion and there's probably no easy solution... at least none that would please everyone. I'm literally trying to make a new head out of nothing.

After your comment I tried a few things make it seem a little more integrated... one solution I found was to use the other shoulderpad just behind that one, giving it more of a segmented metal plates feel than just a single plate and helping it blend down into the neck. I'm considering some very simple greenstuff work to integrate the pieces somehow... I could try to make it look bolted on, or else make it look fused to the flesh around the edges, which at this point I'm leaning towards.

Either way, no harm can really be done, its just some spare parts blue-tacked together for now. More feedback?

I really like the tentacles, I'm kinda on the fence with the shoulder pad, but I'm really not sure about the marauder shield. I'd much prefer to see some greenstuff. The head would look pretty cool fairly smooth or just muscle (google images: bloodmaw).

That's a possibility, yes... I had planned to do that originally, but I'm fairly new to sculpting and finding green stuff pretty... a huge pain in the neck to work with. However that's not a limitation, gotta start sometime!

Yeah green stuff isn't easy to work with, but there are a few things which makes it easier. Wet your tools regularly and give it 20-30 cute time before working with it. There are a bunch of tutorials online and they're invaluable. Either way the shoulder pad works and if you're happy with the shield get it sprayed and painted :D
