Greetings, My local GW store is having a 1000 point Doubles Tournament. We take 1000 points and double up with an unknown partner to fight two other opponents (each who have a 1000 point army). Sooo, I don't know who or what army I will be teamed with. I've never played this kind of tournament and would appreciate some advice. First List idea: Throgg (general) 7 x Trolls (Throgg goes here) 8 x Ogres - MoK, xtra wpn (giving them a whopping 32 attacks if they keep their frenzy!!) 1 x Giant - MoN I figure each of these units is a heavy hitter. Very susceptible to magic (purple sun), but in hand to hand they have good strength and heavy hitting. Second List idea: Festus 14 x WoC - MoN, FC, Halberds w Shield 6 x Ogres - MoK 1 x Giant - MoN 5 x Warhounds - Vanguard, Poison attacks. This unit is much more versatile and includes magic, but I fear is not that much of a heavy hitter. What do you guys think? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Ambrose |

I've played a couple of really casual doubles games among friends. We generally did a similar thing; everyone makes a list, then you roll for a partner, then play against another group of two. Assuming named characters are allowed, I'd take the second list. The versatility granted by Festus is huge, and Nurgle Warriors with Halberds can still take and give out a fair amount of damage. I've found that when making a blind doubles list, you don't want to ignore Magic, but you don't want to focus on it either (unless you're Vampire Counts or Dark Elves and really want to live in the magic phase). Festus provides a buff even if your partner needs most of the Power Dice to make their list work. If they ignored magic.. then more dice for you! The second list may not hit as hard, but the versatility is too clutch to pass up. |

Additionally, have you had much experience with Chaos Ogres? How have they worked out for you previously? I've wanted to build some up, but have yet to do so, so would love to hear any war stories about them. |

Chaos Ogres are a solid unit, especially Khorne or Slaanesh marked. If you can get them in to combat with low to mid strength infantry they are especially effective. I've had good success against Beastmen, Skaven and Empire with them. They are also good against squishy MSU Elves, but beware of other monsters and heroes. Knights aren't a great target either as you will struggle with strength 4 versus 2+ armour saves, but lots of attacks mean they'll potentially roll some ones. Since you don't know what your partner will bring I'd look to drop the giant and run some marauder cav, put a banner in the ogres and add the +1 leadership or flaming banner to the warrior unit. You can add an extra ogre or two if you have the points. This gives you a little more speed and flexibility in the list, especially if your partner turns out to be an Empire or Dwarf gunline. Also drop the poison on the hounds. It isn't worth the extra points. Edited by Nongor, Oct 9 2013, 02:16 PM.

Thanks for the feedback all, I've had a good experience with ogres as flankers (usually a unit of 4-6). They have amazing impact hits and with the MoK and extra hand weapons 4 in the front gives 20 attacks while frenzied! I have yet to try them in a big block, and if I do, they would not be just flankers but an assault unit. They need to avoid shooty stuff but with their high movement and the desire to charge them in, it usually doesn't take long. Ambrose |

I bring a small unit of 4 Nurgle Ogres with Great Weapons and they can dish out a lot of pain. With Musician and Champ, they come in at a cool 200 points, so pretty cheap too. |
