Hello

After a few months of deliberating, I've decided to start a new army (I normally play Skaven) & I settled on WoC

I bought the army book yesterday (yet to arrive) & before I start buying stuff is there anything in particular I should buy/ignore?

I know I'll need warriors & a lord/hero or two & there are some models I really like - the chaos lord, vilitch, valkia, the sorcerer lord, chariot, chaos lord on mount, forsaken, chaos knights, chosen ...so many :P

Are there things which are pointless getting? I don't often see forsaken or chosen in lists, but the models are so good!

Generally speaking, it seems the online consensus regarding best and worst in the book would be :
Top tier
- DP (especially of Nurgle)
- Gorebeast chariots
- Throgg and/or Trolls *
- Chimera
- Mark of Nurgle
* They also are perfect as cannon-shields for the DP
Bottom tier
- Slaughterbrute
- Mutalith
- Forsaken
- Lore of Tzeentch

The rest is very situational and depends on your style. For example there are some who really love the Chosen + Shrine combo, although others swear against it...

I wouldn't bother with marauders, they are too expensive for what they achieve. I like to fill my core with chariots, dogs and trolls (if you use Throgg trolls are core).

The battalion can be a good start. It also gets you bits to customize, in case you decide to use a unit for something else. Dont worry about what sucks now. 9th ed. will nerf what everyone has anyway, most likely, and buff what they dont ;)

Although, chariots is the only unit we have that has been a top choice in every edition, so get those. The models are great :)

Thanks for the replies - I love throgg & trolls (although I might get river trolls & adapt..not looked into it yet if that would work, but was an idea).

I didn't want a DP, but I might have to get one - will have to check out the rule book when it arrives.

Warriors are a definate, as are chariots and chosen. Forsaken I'll put on a back-burner for now. But I will get some chaos knights for the great models.

Chaos lord & chaos lord on mount are such great models, I just have to get/use them, even if I use them as stand-ins for other things. Same with sorcerers.

That I think will do for the time-being :P although, at some point I will get valkia, even if i never use her

As far as the Daemon Prince goes you will need one for sure if for no other reason than to have one for the eye of the gods rolls which if you play enough games are going to happen.

One other thing that you should know about our book at least how I look at it is that almost nothing is bad. There are some better and worse choices than others but unlike some books i.e. tomb kings where there is only a couple of great units and everything else sucks, almost everything in our book is at least fairly viable especially in the hands of someone who is a competent general, so I would recommend that you get what you love and what you personally think will work and go from there. Of course if you have any questions we are always here to help out, but while we do certainly have a strong net list it is definitely not our only viable options.

Anyways glad to see you here and can't wait to your list that you do decide on to slaughter those weaker races in the name of the chaos gods.

If you like to vary your army, I`d suggest painting it “unmarked“. This way you can play a nurgle only or tzeentch only or mixed army with the same models, without it looking strange. The different marks and equipment options support quite different play styles.
