I. The Beginning 1. General Rules for the Board. - The Cbox, located at the bottom of the page, is privately owned and paid for by Infiniti and is a separate entity from the rest of the board in regards to the rules. Complaints and such about it or issues on it are strictly prohibited. The Cbox's rules are separately defined in its header. Those with red or blue names in the Cbox are its staff, and have the power to ban or delete posts. If an issue is had with the Cbox staff, take it directly to Infiniti. If Infiniti's the guy you have an issue with... well, tough luck, he is the law on the Cbox. - The staff are the law. None of the below rules give away this right. Despite such, we do strive to be reasonable people. No staff member is exempt from the rules of the board. - Respect and courtesy at all times must be observed. This includes posting in a timely matter if you are roleplaying. Debates are okay, and even welcomed in many cases, but there is a point in which they become unhealthy. - Flaming is explicitly prohibited - flaming is defined as an online argument that becomes particularly nasty or derisive towards one or more parties involved in it, usually involving unfounded(or otherwise) personal attacks; insulting one person or another takes precedence over the merits of the argument itself. - As an addendum to the previous rule, bullying, teasing and harassing other members is prohibited as well. This extends to any activity that is unnecessarily harsh/aggressive or inconsiderate towards another forum member. Even if the member(s) him/herself is being as such, two wrongs don't make a right; it is not your place to take matters into your own hands and act in the same manner as them. This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to tolerate the person's behavior, but rather that you shouldn't stoop to their level. A notable extension of this rule is that racist/misogynistic/homophobic/etc. comments are strictly forbidden. Insulting entire racial/ethnic groups, looking down upon women(or men, even), mocking someone's sexual preferences or other acts of closed-mindedness can and will be dealt with punishment in spades. - Spam - everyone hates it. As such it is strictly against the rules to do so. Spamming is defined as often a slew - or even just one - of messages that are extremely off-topic and have little to often no relevance to the subject at hand and are there simply to bother other people or just to be stupid. Even though posts made in the OOC section of the forum do not count towards your post count, spam is just as frowned upon there as it is in the IC section. Multiple topics on the same matter by the same person can also be considered spam - if there's already a topic on something you want to talk about, go in there. - Keep the themes of your RPs at a reasonable level of maturity. Implied sexual content is allowed to an extent, however if it gets to be too much you are required to put a "Mature" tag in your topic title, or a similar tag denoting this status. The same can be said for topics with more mature language; quite a few of the veteran members are known to use mature language, and as such in an RP it gets past a certain extent you must put a similar 'Mature' tag in your topic title. - Only one account is allowed per person. A person with more than one account is referred to as a hydra. Staff members can easily tell when this is happening, and it can be proven. If a member is found guilty of having more than one account, the accounts will be deleted and punishment will be given depending on the severity of the case. Exceptions can be made in the case of, for example, having joined ages ago and forgetting your password, having a different e-mail address, etc. - Backseat moderating will not be tolerated, period; backseat moderating is defined as more or less trying to do the job of the staff or telling the staff what they should do. It goes without saying, but telling the staff what to do is a horrible idea. Similarly, moderators shouldn't tell administrators what to do and the like. There is a definite hierarchy in place. Respect, and it will be returned. - Literacy to a degree is required; use proper spelling and grammar when typing. A classic example would be typing out 'you are great' instead of 'u r gr8'. Use proper punctuation and TURN OFF YOUR FREAKING CAPS LOCK ARGH when speaking on the forum. Posts with bad spelling, punctuation and the like are painful to read. If English is not your first language, leniency will obviously be given - in fact, we would be more than willing to help you with your English if you are not good at speaking and writing it! However, this is not an excuse to use chatspeak and the like on the board. - If you have a personal issue with another member, do not deal with it directly on the board itself. Any problems with another member that you have should be taken to either the board's private message system, an instant messenger, or any other alternate form of communication excluding the board's Cbox. Pressing any of your personal issues on the board will result in punishment, possibly for both parties if both are involved. Any issues concerning the staff themselves should be handled in the exact same manner. No matter what the issue is for anyone, a civil resolution should be reached. - This board attracts people from all walks of life, and as such you must be accepting. Just because someone worships the Great Space Emperor Zog and offers a daily sacrifice of cow to him on an altar made of cheese every day does not mean that you should harp on him about how he should instead worship the Almighty Patron Saint of Rat Sphincter. People of all faiths, political leanings, sexual orientations, and the like all live here together. We might be a bit of a dysfunctional family, but we all have to learn to peacefully coexist! - Ask once if you want something. It's not necessary to continue pestering the staff about anything; we will get to your inquiry or request as soon as possible, but if an extended amount of time passes and you are not helped, you may ask again. If you don't get a 'favourable' result, it's bad form to try and go behind that staff member's back and ask someone else. Usually we all have contact with one another, so we will know. The staff do not owe you this or that, and trying to get what you want even though we tell you otherwise both earns you a bad rep on the board and often punishment from the Staff. You have been warned. - If your profile or other staff-approved item is called in for reapproval by another staff member, or even the staff member who approved you in the first place, they must be the ones to finally sign off on the reapproval. Other staff members may look at it and provide critique and the like, but they may not provide the final approval. If, for some reason, the staff member who called the reapproval dwindles in activity for a period of time, another staff member of equal or higher rank may take over for them. Similarly, if a staff member helped you design something, they are strictly prohibited from approving it. 2. Rule Violations and Punishments Offenses are generally classified in three categories: small, large, and Ban-worthy. The penalty of the offense can be decided by the staff member who found the rule break. If you feel your warning was in error, you may contact an Administrator to review the situation and come to a conclusion. Small offenses will usually be given a verbal warning or a raise of a users Warn Level. The post in question may also be deleted. Larger offenses such as heavy flaming, gross spamming, pornography, etc. will be dealt with on a much more severe level. Depending on the scale of the offense, you may be placed on moderator approval or outright suspended for an extended period of time. Warn level will definitely be raised. Ban-worthy offenses are as they sound: Banworthy. you will be immediately banned and any alternate accounts you make to subvert the ban will be destroyed and only strengthen our resolve to keep you banned. If we ban you, you are more than likely meant to stay banned. Three raises to a warn level results in a ban. However, the staff are not machines. If offenses where made long in the past and depending on the severity of your final strike, you may not be permanently banned and instead receive a smaller punishment. 3. Joining To become an active member, you must first head to the Join forum and read the pinned topics. They provide useful information that can guarantee your safety through the approval process. Once you do that, you may fill out the character temple located in a pinned topic at the top of the Join Forum, copy the template, and fill in the blanks with your own character information. Once you are done, post the resulting Character Sheet as a new topic. Look back at the template for more details on what each section means, if needed. Mostly, it is self explanatory. You may apply for as many characters as you can keep track of and handle.
After posting your profile, a staff member will go over it and make sure the characters are balanced. If there are any problems, the staff member will tell you to change them by editing your post. When all errors have been fixed and the character is balanced, a staff member will approve of it, and you may repost the profile in it's entirety in the Approved Characters Forum. Upon approval, your character is gifted with 10,000 Zenny to use as they wish, as well as 3 un-upgraded Special Weapons of your choice that have a Mech Rank of C or D included in their statistics.
Once everything is in order, you are free to start roleplaying on the board. The best idea from this point is to look for an open RP that the other users won't mind you joining, or creating a new RP in an area friendly to new members. Kattelox is designated as a safe area for new members – this way you aren't likely to be bothered by the more sinister members of the board, and can play with fellow newbies or even older members until you're ready to step into the world. Exceptions can be made with staff consent, but for the most part this will be how it is. All new characters for now start on Kattelox Island for now. This is because the other areas are substantially harder than Kattelox, and we'd like for a few people to work themselves up to bigger things first. If you really want you can try another island, but don't expect many people to follow. As mentioned in the template explanation, you choose which area you start in. As much of the world is covered in water, the primary form of translation from island to island is either air or sea travel. With very, very few exceptions, all characters do not own such transportation themselves and are therefore often confined to the island that their player chooses to start on. Reflecting this, you are required to keep track of your characters' locations in your signature - this is the category of forums that your character is capable of RPing in. Example: Character A's Location reads as 'Kattelox Island'. As such, they may RP in areas such as Cardon Forest, Kattelox City, the Old City, and Clozer Woods. Characters may not relocate to other islands without some form of transportation - luckily, all islands offer public transportation systems from island to island by air and sea, however it is at a cost. To move to another island, simply make sure your character isn't roleplaying in a topic anywhere on your current island(as to not cause any issues), deduct 2,000 Zenny from your character's total Zenny in your signature, and change your character's Location to your preferred island. That's it! Not very complicated, and no we're not going to make you do a topic just for transportation, unless you actually want to. This is a trust system - we're going to trust you to play this all well, however we do watch and we frankly like things working this way, so please just bear with it all. Your characters are fully capable of obtaining dedicated methods of transportation from island to island in the future. By default, each player may only use ONE Carbon/Humanoid character within a single RP topic. This rule may be waived, in the event that all players involved agree to using multiple characters each. This is to make sure players with single characters don't get swamped in battle by players with a virtual army. That said, if another player DOES bring in multiple characters into a thread without the agreement of the other participants, contact a Staff Member immediately so the situation may be resolved. 4. Basic Roleplaying 4a. On Godmodding, Metagaming, and Powergaming The first and most important rule of roleplaying around here is to be courteous to the other members. Don't force anyone else to do something they do not want to do, whether this is under your control or not, as this will be considered Godmoding. [/b]
The roots of Godmodding come from the fact a person who does it is playing God. Given certain conditions during a plot, the staff may briefly take control of player characters in order to push the story along, but this is the only exception to this rule. There is a second definition of Godmodding which also applies to this board:
If Godmodding is noticed in excess, countermeasures will be taken. Proper roleplaying etiquette states that attacks should be made in order to allow opponents to respond. As you can see in example one below, the poster has already decided that their attack has hit and described the effects of getting hit. In example two, the attack is made without claiming what the effect was, instead displaying the intent of the attack.
As you can see, this allows the other person a chance to dodge or counter the attack. Any action should be displayed in the same way, including outside of battle interactions. This is essential to good roleplaying, and the roleplay can progress smoothly. Another issue which must be addressed is metagaming; metagaming is defined as using outside, out of character knowledge which your character should not have any idea of, and actually applying it within the roleplaying universe, usually just for one's own personal gain. Metagaming is heavily frowned upon - while doing it once might get you just a small warning, repeat offenses of this incur serious punishment. Additionally, this isn't so much 'against the rules', but it's a pain to deal with: Powergaming. Powergaming is defined as playing a game in a highly, if not maximally-exploitative, goals-only-oriented fashion, ignoring anything else such as enjoying the roleplaying experience and having fun. In some cases exploits are punishable, mind you, and anybody who does powergame generally earns the ire of the entire board. By powergaming you tend to mark yourself as someone who nobody wants to be around. Finally, on this RP we prefer the 'Three Sentence Rule', in which a minimum of three good sentences is preferred in all roleplay posts. Be descriptive; this isn't supposed to be a chore, you're supposed to enjoy yourself! What's going on around you, what is your character feeling, seeing, hearing, tasting or touching? Your posts have to convey an experience to whom you're roleplaying with as well, so when you post, think to yourself: "Would I want to read this? Would I enjoy reading it?" Roleplaying Some brief terminology that needs to be addressed, just in case you were unaware:
While in an In Character forum, all posts should be made In Character. Any post or section of post that needs to be made Out of Character to address an issue or ask a question with the matters In Character should have "OOC:" tags placed before what needs to be said. These tags are not necessary in the Out of Character area at the top of the forum, unless you are roleplaying in the Out of Character Roleplay Forum. A brief digression into the OOC RP forum: This is the only Roleplay area that has no effect on the IC doings of the board. It can be used to hold battles using characters from the board, but no prizes can be obtained from roleplaying in this area. Moving back into the IC RP section, keep in mind that for those with second characters, it must be noted that while the two characters you own are allowed to interact with one another in the same RP, said characters MUST be arranged in pre-set Teams of three or fewer; Mechs count towards the 3 character limit of any given Team. While you may control more than 3 total characters, only those from a single Team may participate together in an RP topic, save for special exceptions (i.e., ask a Staff Member first, and make sure they say YES). As far as any topic concerning fighting goes, they are a one-character-one-mech-per-player situation unless agreed upon by all of players involved. For important storylines, the staff may allow free RP Slots, which allow you to participate in the plot as well as finish up any other matters you may be participating in. Generally when a Free RP slot is given, it is understood to occur either before or after the current roleplay you are participating in. That said, be sure to keep the timeline in order, and don't do anything in a topic set in the past that would make one set in the future impossible! If you would like to keep certain people from joining your Roleplay or only wish to have a one on one interaction with another user, please label it as "Private" in the title of Subtitle. The staff will inform you if a plot is a free RP slot or not: Do not assume! Take note of where you roleplay. You cannot start Roleplaying in a topic if it says "Closed" in the title or subtitle, or if only certain members are listed as being allowed inside. If you would like to join this roleplay, send a PM to one of the participants. However, if they say no, do not press the issue. If a topic says "Open" or is not specified, you may join the roleplay if you so desire. If you would like to make your own topics, you are also free to do so. People may join them, or they may not. If only a few hours have passed since the topic's creation, do not get discouraged. Finally, it must be noted that, upon leaving a topic, whether general roleplaying or a battle, you cannot enter again.
