Fireballs happen. Especially in ruins. You know, when it's funny. Or not. Maybe giant robots happen. |

In an attempt to help the members of this board who may not be so familiar with the Legends series(and fans who may or may not lose themselves), we've put together this topic in an attempt to help you understand exactly what's going on, the setting of the world, and the like. Fans of the games may or may not spot differences from canon(whether in this article or any of the other rules or areas of the board) - while we have built off of what was already there(and will be there, with Legends 3 on its way!), we don't seek to just stick to that and are not only branching off, but are changing things a bit seeing as though we don't particularly plan on using too many canon characters, if any(or at least in -directly- referencing them, especially by name). This may be added to as the board goes on, but maybe not. We'll keep you posted. Table of Contents: 1) Terra, Because You Live Here 2) The Diggers and Their Mission 3) Pirates: You Knew They Were Coming 4) Ruins and Their Guardians, Reaverbots 1) Terra, Because You Live Here The planet called Terra(only known as just 'the earth' to its inhabitants) is covered almost entirely by water, a great disaster having befallen the planet in a time before anyone seems to be able to remember with no history book or other folk to recall such a catastrophe. The people living upon Terra(called 'Carbons', however they only know themselves as just 'humans') liken it to a sort of awakening from a deep sleep, finding themselves in a world that they feel that they have always inhabited and yet not, already having a semblance of civilization and understanding of the lay of the world they lived in which continually reveals more mysteries for its brave and curious at heart to unravel. Being that the world is covered mostly by water, continents are generally referred to instead as 'islands' despite some of them being large enough to be considered continents(not all of them are, however). These islands are rather respectfully populated, sometimes heavily, with legends of 'legendary disasters' being prevalent on some islands to happen every century or so. These ideas are backed up by research started on Kattelox Island by its mayor which shows that the ruins might be the remnants of civilizations before them which inexplicably were wiped from the earth by forces unknown. This has not been proven, however, and many researchers remain unconvinced, skeptical. Interestingly, this world seems to be changing around its inhabitants, with the water level seems to be slowly lowering, revealing new and interesting - sometimes scary - things. But because of this general separation that many groups of people have from one another, the people of Terra developed airships and other kinds of mechanical marvels for transport ranging from basic cars or trucks to even great war mechs armed to the teeth. Oftentimes the materials used to create the higher-end technology which the Carbons employ must be hunted for... but we'll get to that later(see: The Diggers, as well as Ruins and Their Guardians, Reaverbots). However, strange things have been happening lately. New ruins are appearing from nowhere, the water level of the planet seems to be gradually lowering, and nobody seems to understand the strange feeling of foreboding that has come over everyone, despite how happy they might be in their every day lives. Days and nights go on, with the sight of a new, strange second moon coming slowly within the vicinity of the planet, viewable by all no matter the time of day. 2) The Diggers and Their Mission Necessary to the sustaining of Carbon technology and other such things upon Terra are the Diggers, the brave(or sometimes not-so-necessarily) adventurers who venture deep underground to find new and interesting things from a world long-past. Oftentimes the highest thing on their list of 'important things that would be found underground' are Refractors, large energy crystals which power the various inventions and technological marvels of the Carbons. These crystals are used for either the Digger's own needs(for example, powering an airship to get to other places) or sold to others, keeping both the Digger in good enough profits to keep doing what he does, and aids people other than himself. Funny enough, the currency of the world of Terra, called Zenny, is in itself related to Refractors - small Refractor shards which have either chipped off of larger crystals, or were created when a Refractor itself had shattered through whatever means. A Refractor is durable, but it can be broken. Being impossible to put back together after having been broken, the Carbons use Refractor shards as currency, then calling it Zenny. Refractor shards are easily findable pretty much anywhere - ruins are littered with them, with larger and more vibrant shards being worth more. On occasion Reaverbots drop them, sometimes you can find them in holes in the wall, treasure chests... practically anywhere. Incredibly low-grade(as in so low-grade they're unnecessary to collect in-RP let alone use as currency) Refractor shards are also used to power small appliances, or even things such as Special Weapons. The usage of Refractors are endless, however the rarity of them keeps the world in almost a constant state of an energy crisis. This is why Diggers are so valued in society, as they are those armed with weapons and various items to defend and support themselves as they trudge through ruins to keep the world supplied with an energy source. A Digger also goes underground for various other reasons - their motivations for doing so are myriad, with each Digger seemingly having a unique reason. Many lift artifacts or bits of ancient technology from ruins, the ancient technology underground being far more advanced than anything the Carbons are currently capable of producing. As such, they rely on what they can find underground. This is often how many folk build larger machines or other pieces of technology - by harnessing the technology found underground and adapting it to new and different things. Digging underground has been regarded by many people to be the key to finding the answers to many things unknown in the world: what caused the world to be flooded as it is now, what were the previous inhabitants of the world like? So few Diggers find clues, but each one that is found is well-celebrated. 3) Pirates: You Knew They Were Coming Of course, not long after Diggers began crawling the ruins, a sort of opposite began to arise. Most often they were called air pirates, however the term is often shorted to just 'pirates'. The term arose from an early period of what veteran Diggers like to call the 'First Digger's Age'(when the first generation of Diggers were around) - as they loaded their findings into their airships, happy with having come out of the ruins alive and with many good finds, on occasion they would find themselves under attack in the skies by other folk who wished to take the goods they had found for themselves. These pirates quickly became a rising problem, and as time went on they stepped things up considerably, with some pirates attacking towns to steal from the townsfolk instead of just Diggers who had the misfortune of coming out of a ruin that they were near. Additionally, on occasion when a town was attacked and the people would resist... given the fact that towns are often considered the 'self-appointed guardians' of the larger ruins on their islands, the people(often the mayor or some other equivalent) would engage some sort of safety protocol, which the pirates would... well, you guess. Some of them were gentle, and others weren't, using as much brute force as was necessary to get into ruins and take everything they could for their own gain or the like. Much like Diggers, a pirate(or group of pirates) will do what they do for any reason under the sun - some do it because they just like to mess with people, because they don't really know any other way to get by and certainly don't want to go underground... or just because they're bored. Some pirate groups have become famous for having massive flying fortresses and armies of mechs under their command to do their bidding alongside what they already do, however considering the general technological know-how, or lack thereof, of most of the people of the world, such a massive project entails having someone who knows how to build them. Being that they live generally off of taking from others in most cases, the level of money a pirate has often fluctuates more than normal - often they live in extremes of rich and well-off, or poor and struggling to get by. 4) Ruins and Their Guardians, Reaverbots A 'ruin' is often classified as any sprawling underground structure which will generally be filled to the brim with technology much more advanced than anything on the surface. Most of this technology is built into the ruins and is therefore more or less impossible to take out of the ruins, however there is a good deal which can be taken out of the ruins. More often than not, these ruins are filled to the brim at the same time with what have come to be known as Reaverbots, rather enigmatic and faithful guardians of the ruins which they inhabit. They come in all shapes and sizes, with a multitude of purposes; that being said, their 'main' purpose is to expunge, generally kill any intruder that they detect. The origins of the Reaverbots are entirely unknown, and for that matter the ruins themselves are rather ambivalent as to their origins. Nobody on the planet knows what sort of civilizations roamed the earth before they came to be, only that both of them have become necessary parts of the everyday lives of certain people for the good of mankind. Refractors, what the Carbons use as money, bits and pieces of ancient technology, strange 'scrap' items, and more can be found underground, and there have been stories of many ruins being connected to each other... Many veteran Diggers believe that there is far more to the ruins than meet the eye, and some of them have stopped Digging in the belief that they are toying with things far beyond man's comprehension, things that are extremely dangerous. The various Reaverbots that patrol the ruins don't help to assuage such thoughts, as a ruin is never depleted of them - they are always there, there are always more Reaverbots to replace the ones that have been destroyed. Nobody knows where they come from, or why they are there, just that the seemingly-mindless robots stand between the Diggers and their goals. Ruins are called as such not because they are ruined or of poor structure, far from it in fact - and try to bear with us during this explanation. As mentioned before, they are large underground structures that are actually more advanced in construction and technology than the surface of Terra. Nobody knows how they were constructed, let alone how they got there - one of the many mysteries which the Diggers seek to solve. Regardless, these ruins are exponentially better-constructed than anything the Carbon populace could hope to accomplish, and as such the walls, floors and such of the ruins are nearly all indestructible unless noted by someone GMing the area. It should be noted, as the idea has come up before, that ruins are not caves with buildings inside of them or things of the like(unless otherwise noted - some ruins have interesting spinoff designs within certain rooms) - ruins could be thought of as near-endless labyrinths, with new pathways to take every time one thinks that everything has been explored.
