Life had been well for the upstart warrior over the past few weeks. After dealing with Beta and becoming the superior fighter within his cabin, he soon worked his way up to be one of the top twenty more elite trainees, an honorable position within the academy. From this position of power, Raditz had access to many of the advanced training locations in the warrior academy, and had increased his power by quite a lot since he had fought Beta. However, he was not done with his training. Not by a long shot. His superiors and his comrades had been dropping hints and spreading rumors of a final test before he could finally graduate from the academy and become an official Saiyan warrior. Then he would be pitted with the greatest warriors of his race against whatever threats who were necessary to be eliminated. Raditz routinely bossed his cabin mates around since the day after his triumphant battle with Beta. He slowly made them pay for what they did. In those short weeks, he made them do things ten times as worse as they made him do. He decided half-way through the fourth week, however, that they had had enough. He wasn’t a complete evil maniac, and he wasn’t a tyrant either. Part of him pitied them having to do the things they did, and over and over they apologized. He had finally had enough and realized his better half. He immediately dismissed all of their orders given by him that week. They were so grateful to him they nearly started to grovel, but Raditz merely walked away before they could embarrass themselves. Oddly enough, that day would soon become special in more than just that one way. A message arrived on the academy network, sent from one of Raditz’s superiors to him directly. He patched the superior in through the audio-video system and saluted his commander. ”Stand down, soldier. I have an assignment for you, Raditz. You are to report to the field behind the main academy building tomorrow morning at ten o’clock sharp. I should hope you know where that is.” Raditz looked at him and nodded, still standing at attention but having already lowered his hand. ”Yes, sir. I know where it is.” The superior on-screen nodded and smiled. ”Good. I shall see you there. Do not be shocked when you see the other arrivals.” And with that, the man ended the transmission, leaving Raditz to only think and prepare. The other arrivals? Hmm… I guess there’s going to be a few more people on this mission. It’s odd that he didn’t tell me the specifics, but I suppose he just didn’t want to ruin the surprise. He walked upstairs to his room and make sure he got a great night’s sleep before his big day on the morrow. He woke up quite refreshed and got ready quickly. He didn’t bother with his usual full get-up that he did when he went on missions. He merely suited up and put on his armoured vest which he used for training. Although it took quite a beating the past few weeks, a few days ago it had been fully repaired, so the armour was in great shape. Raditz looked over at his clock and noticed the time. Nine fifty? Damnit! He immediately thrust open his window and shot out of the window. There was no time for a walk or even a run. He had to fly there. His aura shined a bright purple as he soared through the city’s sky like it was nothing. In two minutes, Raditz arrived at the warrior training facility. He surveyed the outlying area and remembered what his commander had said. ”Report to the fields behind the academy building.” He descended slowly towards the ground behind the academy and touched down within a sparse crowd of other warriors. He recognized a few of them, but many of them he had never seen before in his life. Raditz counted the amount of scouters in the crowd. It figured to be about 5 or 6. Raditz seemed to get a different count each time, as it was difficult to see such a small device in the crowd. Those would be the elites of the large group. You weren’t issued a scouter until you were guaranteed to pass selection or if you already had graduated and become a staple warrior in the military. Raditz sighed and stretched out as much as he could. He figured it was a pretty large group effort to have such a crowd. He counted twenty heads in the crowd. It would later occur to him that this was probably the top twenty strongest cadets of the academy. Twenty warriors was too much for any one task, so this had to be some sort of test for them all. He flexed his muscles and awaited the arrival of his commander. He didn’t wait very long. A whizzing noise came from a platform directly in the center in the ring, which got everyone’s attention. Where nothing stood before, now stood the superior of every warrior in attendance. His name was Artich, and was a Lieutenant in the military forces of Vegeta. Every ranking officer spent a small fraction of time back in the Academies, teaching the younger warriors some tricks and overseeing their training. The seasonal officer was Lt. Artich, and he was a tough nut. He looked at all of the cadets with his stone-cold eyes and overall rough attitude. ”Alright, men. I have devised a specially-designed obstacle course for you all to run. However, you are no longer in boot camp anymore. This is a dangerous course. You can lose your life, so be cautious.” He clicked a button on the small remote in his hand, and several machine noises clanked. The sounds seemed to resonate from the ground. Raditz and a few others immediately ascended into the air and moved to the other side of the crowd. The ground beneath where they just stood was gone, and a metal staircase appeared before them. Lt. Artich jumped to the top of the stairs and looked at the cadets. ”Follow me.” The cadets filed in after the army lieutenant. The stairs lead to a secret cavern underneath a small region of the city. The sheer size of the cavern amazed even the best warriors in the group of twenty. Nobody had any idea this was even here. The group slowly descended the stairs and noticed the entire cavern was a giant obstacle course. This was no ordinary course of tires and rope swings and nets, no, this was something more. There were many dangers within this course of seemingly endless difficulty. Traps lied in wait around every corner; flames roared from secret pits in the wall; and at the end, it seemed to have a sandstorm, then a blizzard, and then a heat wave, just before the finish. Raditz eyed over the course and memorized its layout so he could use that knowledge to run it faster. He looked back at the group he was following and noticed the five others looking out at the course, just like him. They were smart alright, not just strong. Artich stepped down upon the cavern floor first, followed quickly by the other twenty warriors. The rocky floor of the cavern was surprisingly smooth and very cool, given the circumstances. The commander pointed towards a big white line that had the word “Start” written in front of it. ”Line up there, boys. It’s time for you guys to run this thing.” The group shuffled over, and amazingly, the twenty each could line up on the line without anybody having to stand behind somebody else. ”Before we start, let me explain. The first five fighters to pass that line will be assigned to a special assignment, and will graduate from the academy. The rest will stay within the academy until I assign a new test for you all. There are five areas to this course. Area 1 tests your agility and quick thinking. Area 2 tests your nimbleness and cool-headedness, as well as your ability to focus on the main task in a mission. Area 3 contains many automatic weapons which will be fired off around the area, you must avoid those and anything you have previously encountered to pass that. It tests your agility and dodging skills. And finally, the final area has everything within the first 3 areas, and has many aliens placed inside of it for you to kill. You must defeat 2 and carry their heads to the finish. You may also encounter flame traps and frost-causing weapons.” The entire group of fighters sighed. This test was extremely difficult, and looking at the course now, it just looked that much harder. Raditz was determined to get into the top five, but that would mean either eliminating one of the five elite cadets or outpacing him. Hmm.. ”One more thing. You can do anything you want EXCEPT skip an area. On your marks, men. Get ready… GO!” As his voice boomed out into the cavern, he fired a tiny ki blast into the air which exploded on the cavern ceiling. Immediately, ten warriors were off at a fast pace, Raditz among them at eighth. The rest were much slower than them. The five elites seemed to work as a team, warning the others of dangers and each following each other’s path for ease. Raditz pulled ahead as seventh after the fighter who was in front of him got slammed by a swinging boulder. Besides that, Raditz and the others had to jump over rolling logs and avoid various traps of death. Raditz stumbled over one log and was falling towards a spike trap, but he blasted a tiny ki wave at one of the spikes and propelled himself over. Once he landed on the ground behind the trap, he quickly pulled himself together and raced on ahead. He finished the first area about thirty seconds behind the five elites and only five behind the person in sixth. In the second area, the cadets were supposed to avoid the pre-mentioned dangers, landmines, and had to destroy a spike-shooting dummy to pass onto area 3. The five elites breezed through it like it was nothing and each destroyed a dummy. Raditz destroyed the dummy with a flying kick and then sprinted to the end of Area 2. There were only 8 dummies in total, and as the rest of the pack behind the warrior in 8th reached it, Artich called them all out of the course. The first five breezed through Area 3 before Raditz was even half-way done with it, and that made him really frustrated. Raditz, although one of the more junior members of the group, had worked so hard to get where he was now, and was not just about to lose to some freaks who happened to be really strong. He stopped three-fourths of the way through Area 3 and spiked his energy levels, soaring ahead through the rest of Area 3 in the matter of seconds and continuing onto the final area. He passed the fighter who was previously in front of him and just smiled and waved at him, then laughed and touched down in the middle of the final area. Raditz briefly noticed that the first five were getting significantly slower than they were before, but they were still faster than him, sadly. He gritted his teeth and narrowly dodged a flamethrower before continuing on. He noticed there was only two aliens left, and he remembered his superior’s words: He had to take two heads to the finish. If the other five ahead of him had already gotten their kills, then there was no hope for Raditz. He only hoped that there was still a little bit of time, and he could pass the person in fifth. Raditz jumped ahead and roundhouse kicked one of the aliens, immediately snapping its neck and killing it. The other alien raised its weapon and blasted at Raditz, but he merely knocked the blasts away from him with his hand and soared through the air and slammed his shoulder into the alien’s gut. It gasped for air before collapsing on the ground. Raditz pulled out his knife and cut off the heads of the two aliens and carried them to the finish. There he discovered it had all been for naught. The other five were already there ahead of him. Raditz fell to his knees, but he would not weep. Saiyans did not cry. Instead, he grew angry. The superior approached slowly, and Raditz thought of all the things he could do. He thought it would be too unfair just to slay one of his comrades just to graduate. He rose to his feet and his energy just steadily rose with his anger. By then, Artich had reached the group. Raditz then remembered the last area with the blizzard, heat wave, and sandstorm. He had not encountered any of them.. Unless… ”Congratulations. However, there is one more area for you to beat. The REAL final area.” He clicked a button on the remote in his hand and a wall was removed from in front of the group of six to reveal the true final area of the course. The first section of it had many frost weapons and a giant blizzard, and even from standing outside of it, Raditz was freezing. He rubbed his arms for warmth and wished he had brought his better armour, which provided more warmth. Artich smiled and waved. ”You may now pass. See you at the real finish.” He disappeared with blinding speed and the final six contestants were off running. By now, Raditz had reached his full power from his anger. His purple aura roared around him and he yelled loudly, bursting ahead of everyone else. This boost of speed was just what he needed. For a while, he was first. But as his anger died down and his power decreased, two others passed ahead of him. He remained third until the end of the large blizzard area, which was probably the size of the first 2 areas put together. Raditz then encountered the sandstorm. The bits of sand stung against his skin, and he found that it was cutting through his suit and making him bleed. It felt like there was salt in a bloody wound, and he screamed in pain but preservered, making it through as fourth at the end of it. Two more remained behind him, and Raditz was glad he was ahead. Once he ran into the boiling hot area which was the heat wave, he then wished he could just tear off his armour and his suit and run through it. It didn’t protect against heat at well. In fact, his armour conducted heat, and made him feel even hotter. He needed to keep his armour on to protect him from any surprises, though. He soon noticed the person in fifth racing just beside him, and Raditz could see the finish. The racer spoke to Raditz. ”The warrior in sixth perished of the coldness and wounds of the sandstorm. You don’t need to try so hard.” Obviously, Raditz didn’t believe him, so he powered up as much as he could while running and soared ahead of the fighter, finishing fourth in total. Later Raditz would come to learn that the racer was not lying that one of their own died in the course. Artich approached the triumphant final five and shook all of their hands. ”Congratulations. I am very impressed with all of you. You are all now graduates of the academy, and here is your task.” He handed each of them a letter and walked off. Raditz smiled widely. He had finally graduated from the academy! Now he could take real missions, and serve his king well in battle. He opened the letter he had received and looked it over. He grinned even wider and could only anticipate this next mission… WC: 2,687 / 2,500 |
