Matthew 7:8 - Being Persistant "Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you. For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened to you." Matthew 7:7-8 Having grown up in a family where the children were instructed not to ask for things more than once or else they would endanger the chances of receiving what they had asked for, today's Scripture is one I need to remind myself that God actually wants us to keep on asking, to keep seeking and to keep knocking at His door for it is this very persistance that will enable us to receive the things we are going after. You know, I was thinking of that parable that Jesus used about the widow woman and the unrighteous judge. Because of this woman's persistant beseeching of the judge for justice, the unrighteous judge decided to avenge her just so she didn't wear him out because of her persistance (Luke 18:1-6)! If an ungodly judge will hear the cries of this woman, why would we not think that God will hear our cries, our persistance! What God is looking for is faith, our faith in Him that will continually bring us before Him no matter what circumstances might try to sidetrack us from trusting that He hears us, sees us, and wants us to go through into His will and promises. Let us look at verse 8 of Luke pertaining to the widow woman and the judge, Jesus says,"I tell you, He [God} will defend and protect and avenge them speedily. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find [persistance in} faith on earth." Another words, Jesus is saying, yes, God is more willing to avenge His people than the unrighteous judge but if He did instantly where would faith be found? If God responded to our prayers instantly there wouldn't be any need for faith. You don't need faith when you know something is going to happen. For example, does it take faith to draw your next breath? No, it just happens and all too often we take this simple and wonderous thing for granted. So, if God answered our prayers instantly, supplied what we were looking for as soon as we began looking for it, and opened the door at our very first knock, why would we need faith. Just like drawing our next breath, it would be so common place that it wouldn't be long before we took God's responses for granted. Yet, God is looking for faith in His people for without faith it is impossible to please Him. So God is telling us how to walk in faith - be persistant! Don't give up, neither on your prayers, your seeking, your knocking and especially don't give up on Him!!! This is the faith in action that He is calling for in His people. It's not the way I was raised and surely the world doesn't want us to walk like this. But this is what Jesus is telling us that God wants and when He comes checking on us, will we be found to be one with faith or one without? "Persist My dear people", is the cry of the Lord. Webster's Dictionary defination of: persist: 1. to refuse to give up, especially when faced with opposition. |
