Window Washer Who Fell 47 Floors Is Awake, Talking Doctors Stunned, Call Alcides Moreno's Progress 'Miraculous' Reporting Pablo Guzman NEW YORK (CBS) ― The window washer who plunged 47 stories and survived is now talking about his recovery, which doctors say is a miracle. CBS 2 HD spoke to both his doctor and his wife on Thursday. "If you are a believer in miracles, this would be one," said Dr. Philip Barie of N.Y. Weill Cornell Medical Center. Back on Dec. 7, Alcides Moreno and his brother were on a piece of scaffolding that fell from a 47-story building at 227 E. 66th St., between Second and Third avenues on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Alcides, 37, survived. His brother, Edgar, did not. "He knows about his brother's death, but my husband's very religious," Rosario Moreno said. "He believes that when it's time for you to go, you just go." Rosario Moreno believes her husband knew right away his brother did not survive the fall. But how did he survive? Luck. Great physical shape. The awareness to use his training to almost "surf" the currents with the scaffold. And maybe, maybe ... that intangible, that "thing" his doctor was asked about: "I'm not a deeply religious person personally, but when I … I can understand what the religious people mean about a case like this," Dr. Barie said. Rosario Moreno says the first time her husband spoke was soon after she was showing him again how to caress her face. "So I've been taking his hand and doing that, so apparently he tried to do it to one of the nurses (laughter)," she said. "I looked at him and said, 'You know, you're not supposed to do that. I'm your wife. You touch your wife. You're not supposed to touch the nurses. And he turned around, and in English, he said, 'What did I do?'" He spoke. It was Christmas day. Doctors believe after about a year more of work, Alcides Moreno will walk again. Incredibly, his wife says he thinks nothing about climbing skyscrapers.
