I am sharing Pastor Tan's comments to his students at Logos Bible School. stace  ------ 1Q Some have concluded that Paul had a certain eye diseases or ophthalmia with him when he was in the Galatian churches (Gal 4:14 "trial in the flesh"), because according to Gal 4:15, they would have plucked out their eyes for Paul, and that Gal 6:11 says that Paul had written large letters. Did Paul really had eye troubles? If not, how do we interpret Gal 4:15, and 6:11? Ans Yes, I have heard of this argument in the Baptist Seminary when I was there during the years of 1976-1978. It is a weak argument because there is no indication that Paul was suffering from eye disease - only shortsightedness, which is common even among today's preachers. As to Gal 4:15 and Gal 6:11, Paul did not mention that it had anything to do with the eyes. Moreover, allowing for a sickness would conflict with Matthew 8:17 but allowing for physical weaknesses (not diseases) due to physical persecution does not violate the atonement. 2Q What was the "trial in the flesh" in Gal 4:14 that Paul had, and was he still in the process of receiving his healing at that time? Ans Remember that when Paul was going through the regions of Galatia in his first missionary journey. The churches of South Galatia: Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe were established in Acts 14. It was in Acts 14:19 that Paul was stoned. He definitely had a 'trial of the flesh' as he continued ministering after that. It probably took six months to a year to properly heal - yet Paul continued faithfully in his ministry despite his physical scars that were still healing. |
