In The Footsteps of Elisha (Part 46)
by Robert Holmes

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
THE PLANNING CHAMBER
"The man of God had told [the king]; thus he warned him so that he guarded
himself there more than once or twice. now the heart of the king of Aram was
enraged over this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, 'Will
you tell me which one of us is for the king of Israel?' One of the servants
said, 'No, my Lord O king; but Elisha the prophet who is in Israel tells the
king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom chamber'." (2 Kings
6: 8-12).
Here is another example of how the Kingdom of God reaches out and touches
the lives of people inside Israel (the Church) and outside in Syria (the
world). Only this time, the effect is not positive, as it was for Namaan, it
is negative - adversly affecting those opposing the Kingdom. Syria is making
war against Israel. The Syrian king is making plans with his generals and
captains in his bedchamber - his war room or planning chamber. Unfortunately
for him, God is showing Elisha, the prophet in Israel, all his plans. Not
once or twice, but many times, the enemy's plans are thwarted because the
king of Israel is forewarned.
At first, the king of Aram suspected a spy in their midst. After discovering
the power of the prophetic, however, he sought to destroy the prophet. One
sunny morning Elisha's servant opened the curtains to find an army encamped
around the city preparing to destroy them! In spite of superior fire power,
the outcome was total defeat for the Syrians, who were blinded by God and
led away by Elisha! This story contains the now famous "look up and see"
episode, where the angels of the Lord were gathered in fiery chariots.
In ancient times many cities were walled. The outer wall enclosed a village,
and inside that was a fort. Inside the fort was a tower, and the king's
chambers were located in the tower - the most securely protected place. At
the top of the tower was a viewing platform for the watchmen, and below that
was the king's bed chamber. It was usually a circular room with curtains and
private meeting areas. This was called the war room or planning chamber
where the king would meet with his counsellors. Our modern day equivalent
would be the Pentagon in Washington, or the head offices of ASIO in
Canberra. Imagine a ministry in the Church that could listen to the
conversations of our top military planners. Imagine a ministry that could
see into the Caucus room of Parliament. Such is the power God wants to
release to His Church and its prophetic servants. You don't have to imagine,
because this ministry really exists, today.
THREE LEVELS OF INSIGHT
There were three levels of prophetic insight operating in this story.
Firstly, Elisha had revelation of the plans of the enemy. Secondly, he then
saw beyond that into the spirit realm and saw the plans and work of the
Lord. He saw the angels in chariots of fire. Lastly, his servant saw in the
realm of the natural, all the armies of Syria.
The servant had a first heaven revelation - he could only see the natural.
Above that was the realm of the celestial bodies - referred to as the second
heaven. Elisha saw into this realm when he perceived the enemy's plans.
Above that was the third heaven, what we would really call "heaven" today.
It was the 'basement' of God's dwelling place. This was the realm Elisha
saw into when he saw the chariots of fire.
Above the third heaven, the celestial dwelling place, rose to the seventh or
"highest heaven".
EXAMPLES OF SEEING IN THE SPIRIT
There are several occasions in Scripture when a minister sees in the spirit
realm, events and circumstances happening at great distance from their
physical location.
Paul was with the churches in Colosse and Corinth, even whilst he was in
prison. He said, "I am with you in spirit," both to bless and to judge.
(Colossians 2:5, 1 Corinthians 5:3) Elisha "went with" Gehazi whilst he
stole from the soldier who had been healed. "Did not my spirit go with you?"
asked Elisha. (2 Kings 5:25,26) John, whilst languishing on an island, wrote
to the church in Smyrna, informing them that certain of their members
belonged to the local coven of satan worshippers. (Revelation 2:9) He told
the church in Pergamum they lived where the throne of satan was placed - and
as a result one of their number had been killed. (Revelation 2:13) He warned
the church in Thyatira not to tolerate the manipulative control of Jezebel
in their midst, and also told them she had led some to worship idols and
commit fornication. (Revelation 2:20) All of this he saw by the Spirit.
In 1990, Paul Cain had met with the then president of the U.S.A. and was
asked to provide prophetic insight concerning Middle East, the imminent Gulf
War and any other events that might unfold in the region. After the meeting
Paul was to ring the President with any further feedback. Paul foresaw the
war, and the movements of Saddam Hussein, but had lost or misplaced the
number to call. So he tried the general listed number of the White House.

After three unsuccessful attempts to connect via the switchboard he prayed,
asking God for the phone number. When he received it, he called direct and
gave his input. The very next day agents (we are told) from the FBI, CIA,
and NSA were all over his office asking, "Who told you the number, who is
the spy?"
A WARNING
The kind of spiritual insight offered by the prophetic, especially as it
relates to this function, is very valuable. One does not need to stress how
Israel profited from not being ambushed many times as Elisha warned them.
The Churches of the Asia rim profited greatly from John's insight, given in
his letters from Patmos. This insight is not mere knowledge, or even a "word
of knowledge," but strategic insight. The Hebrews called this da'ath - being
aware, cunning, planning, or foresight. Without this knowledge,
understanding, perceptive insight, Scripture is clear:
"My people will go into exile for lack of understanding; their men of rank
will die of hunger and their masses will be parched with thirst." (Isaiah
5:13).
"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected
knowledge, I also reject you." (Hosea 4:6). Solomon took this thought a
little further, indicating that without vision, without prophetic foresight,
we would perish (die on the vine).
The Hebrews called this chazown - oracle, vision, or a revelation:
"People without vision perish." (Proverbs 29:18). David lamented that, "We
do not see our signs, there is no longer any prophet, nor is there anyone
among us who knows how long." (Psalm 74:9 NKJV).

A PROPHETIC EARLY WARNING SYSTEM
Back in 1996, there was a movie in the box office called "Twister". This
movie was an education to me, not because of the content (though
spectacular), but because of what the Lord taught me about the eyes and ears
of the Body. In one scene a town was destroyed by a tornado. A woman was
talking to her 'twister chasing' niece and she remarked, "Jo, we just didn't
have any warning. No broadcast, no phone call, nothing! The sirens went off
and seconds later we were hit... you've got to do something to give us more
time!"
In the Church, our early warning system is the ministry of the eyes and
ears. The prophetic is defined in several places in the word as being a
watchman ministry. I wept openly in the auditorium, ashamed of the damage
being done to the Body of Christ because its watchmen were not providing
enough warning to the Church of danger. So many fall under spiritual attack,
and even under the judgments of God, because they are not prepared. God
lamented so long ago to his servant that, "I sought for anyone among them
who would repair the wall and stand in the breach before me on behalf of the
land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have
poured out my indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of
my wrath; I have returned their conduct upon their heads, says the Lord
God." (Ezekiel 22:30,31). Is it still not true today?

The Lord is earnest in His desire to restore the eyes and ears to the
Church, to set up a 'prophetic' early warning system in the Church, to raise
up prophets and intercessors who will stand on the battlements and watch.
These men and women, in a local context, should be giving early warning of
impending judgement from theLord, as well as impending attack from the
enemy. The Lord told Ezekiel, "If I bring the sword upon a land, and the
people of the land take one of their number as their sentinel; and if the
sentinel sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns
the people; then if any who hear the sound of the trumpet do not take
warning, and the sword comes and takes them away, their blood shall be upon
their own heads.... if they had taken [or been given] warning, they would
have saved their lives. But if the sentinel sees the sword coming and does
not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes
and takes any of them, they are taken away in their iniquity." (Ezekiel
33:2-6). The same is true in our day also.
