Q In John 13:34, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another." However, in the OT, God already commanded us to love people, so how is it a "new" commandment and what was Jesus' meaning? Answer: The key is the word 'as'. The commandment is old but the strength to do so is new - it is Jesus within us enabling us to love God and to love one another. Q In 1 John 2:7-8, "Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining." Here John says love is not a "new commandment" but old commandment they had from the beginning. But then in verse 8, he says again he writes a "new commandment". Kind of confused here, so what is the new and old commandment here and if it's the old commandment as explained in verse 7, why does in verse 8 John says it's again a new commandment? Seems a little contradictory. Appreciate your comment. Answer: This is the same as the first question. The key in John's revelation is that we are born of the seed of God and that we love Him because He first loved us. So it is the impartation of God's love within us (Romans 5:1-5) which enables us to love. The outward commandment to love God and love one another is still the same but the inward ability is now given by God's grace through Christ Jesus. Q In Eph 3:18, "comprehend with all the saints" means to "receive (the love of Christ) with all the saints." What is so special about receiving the love of Christ 'with all the saints' of all ages? How is it different than receiving the love of Christ just by yourself, why does Paul tells us here that we need to receive the love of Christ TOGETHER WITH all the saints? Answer: This speaks of the completion of the perfection of God's plan for the church - it takes all of the church to be perfected for the church age to be completed. This ties in with Ephesians 4 where the fivefold brings the church to the fullness of Christ. Q In light of the answer in 4Q, how do we actually receive the love of Christ with all the saints? How do we receive the love of Christ together with the saints who are not on earth anymore, and those who are still alive but we do not know across the earth, and those whom we do know that are part of our lives in different degrees? Answer: Every single member of the body of Christ benefits when one more member is perfected or grow in Christ as we are all intricately tied throughout the space-time continuum in the body of Christ. For example, it is undeniable that where we are today is the result of the work, knowledge and prayers of the saints who have lived before us. And that of the future generation will benefit from our lives and works in Christ. Notice that when there is a breakthrough for the body of Christ in one section of the earth, simultaneously the other sections seem to have the same outpourings even though they have not met physically. |
