Questions from Pastor Tan's Students: 1Q Is more suffering also one of the marks of an apostolic calling since the early apostles seemed to suffered greatly as a result of pioneering churches, as well as Paul that he often boasted his sufferings along with his apostleship? Answer: Jesus said there will be persecution (John 15:20-25; 16:33). There also seems to be a cycle in these things (John 16:2). At the same time the Bible qualifies that leaders are to be people of good reputation and good testimony among those who are outside (Acts 6:3; 1 Timothy 3:7). This implies that generally, the grace and favour will be upon the people of God in the New Testament as it was upon Joseph and Daniel in the Old. But like Daniel, there will always be the evil people who are evil at heart and sought his demise. In terms of suffering, it would be that the true spiritual leaders of the body of Christ would endure much suffering for the sake of the body of Christ. Remember that all the sufferings of Christ were because of the gospel and the Lord Jesus' Name which he bore. All his listed sufferings in 2 Corinthians 11 would not be there if he had not chosen to follow Jesus. To a certain extent, Paul even had the physical scars of some of his physical sufferings (Galatians 6:17). From the Spiritual World point of view (where every act, word and thought sends forth a wave that comes back to the original source), part of what Paul went through was also proportional to the physical suffering he inflicted upon others before his conversion (Acts 8:1; 9:1-2, 16). In brief, the short answer to your question is Yes, as the church will suffer tribulation so much more must the spiritual under-shepherds of Jesus. In practice, it might not necessarily be physical suffering but it could be the bearing of the sufferings and burdens of others in the body of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:28). But since Psalm 23 is in effect, grace and favour will flow in goodness and mercy and God will prepare a table in the presence of enemies. Which means that the grace of God mitigates the suffering such that the vessel only feels the blessing. |
