I was baptized in the Holy Spirit during my early college days. I was in the middle of the Charismatic movement in North Carolina where people like Kathryn Kuhlman, Richard Roberts and his father, Oral, Jamie Buckinham.. and more.. would come and do weekend conferences. It was great. It was in this setting that I was Baptized and began speaking in tongues. Problem was.. I also got caught up in the world. That came on top of being scared off by the gift of the "word of knowledge" that was suppose to give me a greater comfort that my Heavenly Father had heard my morning prayers. My simple and specific prayer, innocent as they were, were told to me word for word by a student under the influence of the Holy Spirit. But, it scared me. I was not accustomed to the supernatural, and even as much as I wanted to know the Lord in a supernatural way, I did not like having a human tell me what I prayed for that early am. So, I was carried away by the world. (Thank the Lord He held onto me anyway.) I ran to a church that denied the gifts of the Spirit, and felt safe. Well, they didn't accept praying in the spirit either. So, my gift lay dormant for many years. But, the Lord kept calling me. And I was calling on Him. I needed Him in an awful way. I longed for a deep relationship with Him. I would try to pray in the spirit, but chill bumps would rise up on my back and it felt like someone was standing behind me. I would only pray for a minute or two before I would stop, get up, and leave the room. But I would keep coming back and trying again. (Again, thank You Lord for Your faithfulness). Well, finally, the Lord broke through to me. I began to pray more and more in the Spirit. Things in my life began to change. I began to hear the voice of the Lord. I am so thankful for His persistence and the gift. I love to sing in the Spirit. stace\o/ |
