What is the place of "expository teaching" versus "topical teaching"
in the church?

The good thing about expository teaching is that it covers the 'whole
counsel' of God (Acts 20:27). There is nothing wrong with topical
teaching if it is comprehensive and thorough. However, most of the
time, it tends to be limited to the minister's favourite subjects and
own limitations of interest and revelation. By forcing oneself to
teach through the Bible, one has to force oneself to cover all topics
which the Bible covers thus providing a comprehensive and balanced
spiritual diet to the congregation.
