by Keith Butler Deuteronomy 12:28 - Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee forever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the Lord thy God. (KJV) There are detailed statements that we need to understand about the blessing and curses in the covenant contract. That is, the blessing is for obedience and the curses are for disobedience. So, therefore, whether or not we function in the blessings or curses of the covenant depends entirely on us. Be aware that your obedience will produce blessings from God or your lack of obedience will produce the curses in your life. Deuteronomy 28:15 says that if we do not hearken to the voice of the Lord and observe to do all of His commandments and his statues, then we shall be overtaken by curses. The word "overtake" means that something is running behind you and is gaining up on you. Soon, it catches you and slams you. If you just look around you, on your jobs, on the streets, all over the place, you will see people who are overtaken by curses in their lives. It is because they refuse to live a covenant life. Many of those curses listed in Deuteronomy, chapter 28, have come on them and overtaken them. Never forget, however, there is a blessing side of the covenant. And all of the blessings of the covenant listed in the beginning of Deuteronomy, chapter 28, are available to every single solitary Word-walking believer. If you are a Word-walking believer, you have a right to claim every one of these blessings in your life. And God's Word shall come to pass if you hearken diligently to the voice of the Lord your God. Understand that God always has the blessing of His covenant available to us. But we have to obey His Word. We have to determine to be covenant men and women of God. It's not that God is causing all of those curses to come upon people. It's when we make a decision to walk away from the protection of His covenant we open the door for Satan to bring curses into our lives. Therefore, we understand that we can't afford to live in sin. Because we are covenant people, we have a clear understanding of why we must live holy before God. As believers, we must keep the words of His covenant and do them so that we may prosper in all that we do. Our obedience will produce blessings in every area of our lives.
