Psalm 103:1 - Day 3 "Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits - " Psalm 103:2 The word "benefit" here is the Hebrew word gemul and means "deed". Taking this further and looking up"deed" in the Funk & Wagnall Dictionary we find it to mean: n 1. Anything done; an act. 2. A notable achievement; feat. 3. Action in general, as opposed to words. 4. Law Any written, sealed instrument of bond, contract, transfer, etc., especially of real estate conveyance. - Syn. See ACT. - in deed In fact: in truth; actually. All throughout Scripture we find where God's people are instructed not to forget Who God is, what He has done and the promised He has given us through His Son Jesus Christ. Why would it be so important to remember all of His benefits and why did David couple it with 'bless the Lord'? This Hebrew word 'barak' is the word translated "bless" and means 'to declare blessed'. It is not just a knowing in ones heart but is meant to be declared, spoken out and in this verse David is saying that it is his soul that is to declare it! Let us look to see what Funk & Wagnall Dictionary has to say about the soul: "n.]1. The rational, emotional, and volitional factulties in man, conceived of as forming an entity distinct from the body. 2. Theol. a The divine principle of life in man b The moral or spiritual part of man as related to God. 3. The emotional faculty of man as distinquished from the intellect.." With this new understanding we recognize that David knew the need to know these things in the depth of his being and not just in his mind. He was to bless God, declare praises unto Him for all of His benefits not just in his mind but in the core of who he was, in his soul. It is one thing to know something in our intellect, in our minds but it is quite another to know it in our soul. As an example, it is one thing to know that God loves us, to have this knowledge placed in our minds but it is quite another thing when this truth implants itself in our souls and becomes a part of who we are, walking in the knowing of God's love for us even when we might make mistakes here and there. In the days ahead we will seek to not forget His benefit. While we might not be able to note them all here, it will prayerfully be a beginning of taking His benefits from our minds/intellect and place them into our hearts and souls as we recall what He has done both in Scripture and in our own lives. Our prayer is that you, the reader, will too, take a journey in forgetting not all of His benefits which are written in His Word and personally manifested in your own lives. To do this blesses the Lord. Hallelujah!!! |
